Updating Georgia football RB Trevor Etienne's makes season debut after suspension

It’s another game day for Georgia football and questions that remained about whether Trevor Etienne will make his Bulldogs debut were answered on the first offensive possesion.

Etienne started at running back against Tennessee Tech. Carson Beck faked a handoff to Etienne and hit Dillon Bell on the left side of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

The Florida transfer running back sat out last Saturday’s 34-3 win over Clemson as suspension for an offseason arrest for DUI and reckless driving.

Coach Kirby Smart has maintained he won’t comment publicly on an Etienne suspension including how long he may be out.

The brother of former Clemson and current Jacksonville Jaguars running Travis Etienne dressed and took part in pregame warmups last week.

Here’s what to know about all of this.

Georgia football's recent history with DUI arrests and suspensions

Defensive back Javon Bullard served a one-game suspension for a DUI in the 2022 season, missing a game against Missouri. Wide receiver DeNylon Morrisette was suspended last season after an offseason arrest that included a charge of DUI drugs. He did not play until the sixth game of the season. It’s unclear how long his suspension was because he was a reserve.

Why is Etienne a key addition to the Georgia Bulldogs?

Georgia lost top rushers Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton who chose to pursue an NFL career.

The 5-foot-9, 205-pound Etienne, a Jennings, La. native, was ranked the No. 19 overall transfer this cycle by On3.com

He’s a preseason first-team All-SEC selection who rushed for 1,472 yards and 14 touchdowns in two seasons at Florida.

How did Georgia’s run game do without Etienne last week?

Georgia rushed for 169 yards on 27 carries — a 6.3 average — Saturday after being held to 20 rushing yards in the first half. Freshman Nate Frazier led the way with 83 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Branson Robinson rushed for 12 yards on seven carries.

Cash Jones rushed for 15 yards and a touchdown and had two catches for 18 yards and freshman Chauncey Bowens rushed for 6 yards on three carries.

"We're going to continue to get better and look forward to using all those guys' skill sets," Smart said. "We've got a really good dynamic in that running back room in terms of the players we have."

Running back Roderick Robinson remains out with a toe injury.

What are the details of Trevor Etienne’s arrest?

Etienne was arrested on March 24 after police said he drove a 2024 RS7 Audi sedan at least 80 to 90 miles per hour in a 50 MPH zone on South Milledge Avenue. Etienne, who told police he had three beers earlier, was alleged to have passed over double yellow lines and passed a vehicle.

Charges of DUI less safe and DUI under 21 were dismissed. Etienne pled no contest to a reckless driving charge and guilty to underage possession of alcohol, failure to maintain lane and a window tint violation.

What has Kirby Smart said about Etienne?

After Etienne’s arrest, Smart called him “a great kid and great person,” but said he would be disciplined.

“As we also know, sometimes kids don’t make the best decisions,” he said. “The older you get sometimes the tougher the consequences are for your mistakes. He is not going to let this mistake define him. He is embarrassed, he is upset and he knows he has made a mistake. It is a teaching moment, and we think he gets better from it.”

Smart this week said not revealing Etienne’s suspension status is not gamesmanship.

“It's a kid,” he said. “It's a kid and his family. It's respecting. When recruits come in my room, they say we respect the way you handle things because a kid takes enough drug-through-the-mud headlines. Everybody puts it out there and nobody knows if it's wrong or it gets dropped or any of that. ...I want to defend the kid. To discuss it again and say it again then it's another whole headline out there."
