Texas basketball vs Ohio State: Tre Johnson breaks Kevin Durant's record in loss
Tre Johnson set a school record for most points by a Texas basketball freshman in his debut with 29 points, but red-hot Ohio State held on for a 80-72 win in the season opener for both teams Monday at the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas.
Johnson, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, led No. 19 Texas in scoring while shooting 10 of 20 from the floor and making five of his 10 3-point attempts. He also converted 4 of 5 free-throw attempts while playing a team-high 39 minutes.
Johnson broke the freshman school scoring record previously held by Kevin Durant, the perennial NBA All-Star who scored 20 points in his first game at Texas in 2006.

Unfortunately for Texas (0-1), Johnson didn’t get much help from a team that shot 38% from the floor.
Eight players took the court for Texas, but forward Arthur Kaluma, the transfer from Kansas State, and Kadin Shedrick were the only players besides Johnson to reach double figures in points with 10 each. Johnson and Kaluma combined for 14 of 27 shooting while the other Longhorns went a combined 11 of 41 from the field.
Tramon Mark, a 6-5 transfer from Arkansas who’s expected to start for the Longhorns, missed the game with an ankle injury, as did wing Devon Pryor. Texas coach Rodney Terry said last week that Mark is “day to day,” which means he could see the court when the Longhorns make their home debut Friday at Moody Center against Houston Christian.
While Texas struggled from the floor, Ohio State (1-0) made 14 of its 28 3-point shots. Four Buckeyes reached double figures, with leading scorer Bruce Thornton tallying 20 points.
