Travis Perry named Kentucky Mr. Basketball; Trinity Rowe earns top honor for girls
There were two things Lyon County's Travis Perry hadn't accomplished before Sunday in his illustrious prep basketball career: win Kentucky Mr. Basketball and win a KHSAA state title.
One down, one to go after the University of Kentucky signee was honored as Mr. Basketball on Sunday in Lexington.
Pikeville's Trinity Rowe was honored as Miss Basketball. She is the first winner from 15th Region since Sheldon Clark’s Ida Bowen in 1991. The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation and Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches presented the awards. Only seniors are eligible.
Rowe scored 2,463 points at Pikeville and is a Southern Mississippi signee.
"I didn't think I was gonna make it to the stage. I was so excited ... (it was) everything I've ever dreamed of," Rowe said.
"I've just been working so hard for this. My season just ended a couple of days ago, so to have my kind of worst heartbreak and then the most exciting thing that ever happened to me in the span of 72 hours is kind of crazy."
Rowe is a five-time district champion and was named first-team All-State in 2022 and earned second-team honors in 2021 and 2023 by the Courier Journal.
Nineteen boys and 19 girls — including eight total from the Louisville area — were named finalists as the result of being named Player of the Year or co-Player of the Year in their respective regions.
Five girls from the Louisville area were finalists for the Miss Basketball honor.
Butler teammates Mariah Knight and Ramiya White were named co-Sixth Region Players of the Year. Knight, a 5-10 forward, has committed to Jacksonville. White has signed with UK.
Central’s Destiny Jones and Sacred Heart’s Reagan Bender were named co-Seventh Region Players of the Year. Jones, a 5-9 forward, has signed with West Georgia. Bender, a 5-10 guard, has narrowed her college choices to Louisville and Western Kentucky.
South Oldham’s Ella Morrison, a 5-8 guard, was named Eighth Region Player of the Year.
Three boys from the Louisville area were finalists for Mr. Basketball: Butler’s Dayton Williams, Seneca’s Quel’Ron House and Oldham County’s Max Green.
Perry, the Second Region Player of the Year, became the state’s all-time leading scorer last year and is averaging 29.5 points per game this season.
He is the first Mr.Basketball winner from the Second Region since Christian County's Anthony Hickey in 2011.
"It's a great honor to be recognized as Mr. Basketball in Kentucky," Perry said. "It's kind of the honor that everybody is working for and hoping to attain ... all the history with it, all the legacy behind it. I'm just very, very blessed and very thankful to be recognized as Mr. Basketball."
The 6-foot-2 guard has scored 5,393 points in six years at Lyon County. As a seventh grader, Perry was the team's leading scorer, averaging 20.6 points per game.
He surpassed the previous record held by Kelly Coleman, who scored 4,337 points from 1952-1956 at Wayland.
Perry also has the record for most 3-pointers made in a career, 698. The previous record was 463.
Beginning Wednesday in Lexington, Perry and his Lyon County teammates will attempt to make a run at the state title in the UK Healthcare/KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena. The Lyons are scheduled to play Ashland Blazer at 1:30 p.m. in a first-round game.
Kentucky's Reed Sheppard won Mr. Basketball in 2023 at North Laurel and now Perry, meaning a Wildcat signee has won the award in back-to-back years. Perry mentioned that he is happy to keep the pipeline going.
"Kentucky is known as a basketball state," Perry said. "To win the Mr. Basketball award and also to go to Kentucky, it's just kind of continuing that legacy and getting to continue to play in front of great fans."
