Transfer news LIVE: Chelsea eye Man Utd’s Sancho after Conor Gallagher deal, Liverpool close on keeper

Enzo Maresca tells Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell to leave or ‘struggle’ at Chelsea

18:20 , Chris Wilson

Enzo Maresca has advised Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell that they will have to leave Chelsea to play regular football, but insisted that his bloated squad was “not a mess”.

The London club secured their latest summer signing on Wednesday as Joao Felix sealed a return to Stamford Bridge, with Conor Gallagher completing a move the other way to Atletico Madrid.

It now leaves the club looking to offload perhaps as many as a dozen players before the end of the transfer window as they try to whittle down their senior playing group.

WATCH: Conor Gallagher sends emotional message to Chelsea fans as he completes Atletico Madrid move

17:55 , Chris Wilson

Conor Gallagher has sent an emotional message to Chelsea fans after completing his move to Atletico Madrid.

The England international signed a five-year contract with the La Liga side on Wednesday 21 August, ending an 18-year association with Chelsea.

In a video shared on his social media, Gallagher sent a classy message to fans, thanking them for all their support.

“To everyone at Chelsea football club, and especially the fans, I want to say thank you for everything in the last 18 years,” he says.

“You made my dreams come true and I’ll forever be grateful.”

Chelsea announced the signing of Atletico’s Joao Felix hours after Gallagher’s move was completed.

Chelsea sign Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid as Conor Gallagher heads to Spain

17:45 , Chris Wilson

Perhaps the biggest news of the day so far...

Joao Felix has completed a return to Chelsea rejoining the Blues on a permanent transfer in a deal that could rise in excess of £46m.

The 24-year-old spent six months on loan at Stamford Bridge in the 2022/23 season and scored four times in 20 appearances. He has signed a seven-year contract.

His return comes after a long-running transfer saga which saw Chelsea negotiate a deal to send midfielder Conor Gallagher in the opposite direction with a move to Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge, has signed a five-year contract with the Spanish side after the clubs agreed a reported £33.7m fee.

Napoli in for Lukaku

17:30 , Chris Wilson

The transfer news just doesn’t stop coming at Chelsea.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has an update on the previously outcast Romelu Lukaku, who was signed for £97.5m in 2021.

The Italian transfer guru has posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that a deal for Lukaku is “expected to happen as Napoli are advancing in talks with Chelsea”.

“[The] Napoli director will meet with Chelsea in London in the next 24 hours to proceed and try [to] find [the] final solution.

“All parties involved expect Lukaku to become [a] new Napoli player” in the coming days.

It is also expected that this deal could be the catalyst for Chelsea eventually signing current Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Ugarte moving closer to United?

17:15 , Chris Wilson

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg is reporting that Manchester United’s much-publicised move for Manuel Ugarte from PSG is getting closer to its conclusion.

He says that it will be “either a permanent deal or a loan with an obligation to buy”, adding that it is “not a done deal yet”.

“But all parties involved to get the deal done soon. Verbal agreement [on contract terms with the player] is done and sealed”.

17:00 , Chris Wilson

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol is reporting that Chelsea are wasting no time in moving on from Raheem Sterling, with new signing Pedri Neto set to take the England international’s number seven shirt.

Neto wore the No. 19 shirt when he made his debut against Manchester City on Sunday, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Sterling had switched to No. 7 last season, but new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says the 29-year-old is training away from the first team and is not in his plans, as he “prefers a different kind of winger”.

Meanwhile, new signing Joao Felix will wear the No. 14 shirt which had belonged to Trevoh Chalobah.

Players Chelsea could look to move on this summer

16:40 , Chris Wilson

With Gallagher and Broja already gone and Felix arriving from Atletico, who could Chelsea move on as they look to improve their squad?

Raheem Sterling is almost certain to leave, as is Ben Chilwell, with both having been told by Enzo Maresca that they are not in his plans.

But who else could leave Stamford Bridge?

Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian striker has spent the last two seasons on loan in Serie A, first with Inter Milan and then with Roma. A permanent switch to Italy now seems likely: Napoli, now under the management of Antonio Conte, are strong suitors.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Still the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, Kepa’s reputation is in need of repair after a tough time on loan at Real Madrid last season that saw him usurped by Andriy Lunin soon after Thibaut Courtois suffered a serious injury. A fresh start may do him some good.

Djorde Petrovic

Petrovic featured 23 times during his debut Premier League season, though may also be cut from the goalkeeper group as Maresca looks to sculpt his side. The Serbian could be available for a loan move or depart permanently.

Trevoh Chalobah

Another of those perhaps feeling now is the time to find a regular starting spot is centre-half Chalobah. A number of mid-table Premier League clubs have been linked with the 25-year-old.

David Datro Fofana

Fofana spent time with Union Berlin and Burnley on loan last season having arrived from Molde in January 2023. Capped thrice by the Ivory Coast, Everton, Leicester and Galatasaray have been mentioned as possible admirers.

Pellistri seals move to Greece

16:20 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United have announced that Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri has completed a move to Athens-based side Panathinaikos.

The fee is understood to be around £5m, with performance related add-ons of around £1.5m.

The Greek Cup holders are coached by Diego Alonso, who was Uruguay manager between 2021 and 2023.

Fulham in a move for promising French youngster?

16:05 , Chris Wilson

In addition to those deals for Berge and Andersen, The Athletic are reporting that Fulham have submitted an offer for promising French youngster Rayan Cherki.

The Lyon player featured for France at the Olympics and is a highly regarded talent in his home country, with several big teams having been linked in the past.

“The proposal for the France Under-21 international is worth an initial £12million, with further add-ons,” write Matt Woosnam and Peter Rutzler.

Fulham to finalise two deals

15:50 , Chris Wilson

Sky Sports reports that Fulham are in the process of finalising two deals.

Joachim Andersen is currently undergoing his medical as part of a move totalling roughly £30m – Fulham are hopeful of having the centre-back registered by midday on Friday, so he can be available for Saturday’s game against Leicester City.

In addition, Burnley’s Sander Berge is also in the process of having his medical, ahead of a move worth up to £25m (with £5m being performance-related add-ons).

Announcements for both deals could come within the next 24 hours.

Is a deal close for the purchase of Everton?

15:35 , Chris Wilson

Reports from France suggest that a deal for the purchase of Everton is close.

L’Equipe report that Crystal Palace part-owner John Textor will meet with Farhad Moshiri today, as he looks to progress a possible takeover of the Merseyside club.

The Texan is waiting to sell his shares in Crystal Palace before he can take over Everton, but should find an agreement ‘by the end of the week’.

Brighton to switch left-backs for the season?

15:20 , Chris Wilson

Another Fabrizio Romano report, this one linked to Brighton.

The Seagulls look to be on course to approve a loan move for Argentina full-back Valentin Barco to move to Sevilla for a season.

In response, the club will look to sign Ferdi Kadioglu as a new left back, for a fee in the range of €30m.

Man City and Gundogan close to reuniting

14:40 , Mike Jones

Manchester City are very close to re-signing of Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona.

The midfielder is being offered a one-year contract plus the option of a further year but the two clubs still need to make an agreement over the move.

Gundogan has ignored interest from Saudi Arabia and Qatar over a return to City.

Sky Sports News reported on Monday that Gundogan had been told he could leave Barcelona as they look to trade players to reduce their wage bill.

Sterling up for sale

14:30 , Mike Jones

Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol is reporting that Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for Raheem Sterling following his omission from the matchday sqaud against Manchester City.

Sterling, who Chelsea bought from Man City for £50m teo years ago, had discussions with manager Enzo Maresca after training on Friday and told he was not in the head coach’s first-team plans.

Chelsea will allow Sterling to leave if he can secure a move before the window closes a week on Friday.

Lacroix is a Palace target to replace Joachim Anderson as he closes in on a move to Fulham. Trevoh Chalobah and Thomas Araujo are other players Palace have on their list.

Carl Rushworth wanted by Championship clubs

14:10 , Mike Jones

There is growing interest from a number of Championship clubs in Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

The Seagulls are pursuing their own options to bring in goalkeepers meaning Rushworth is understood to be waiting to see whether he will be allowed to move on loan in this window.

Any move is necessitated by the goalkeeper’s desire to play regular first team football.

Enzo Maresca has advised Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell that they will have to leave Chelsea FC to play regular football, but insisted that his bloated squad was “not a mess”.

Barcelona in for United winger?

13:50 , Chris Wilson

The Daily Express are reporting that Barcelona may have turned their attentions to signing Man United winger Marcus Rashford, with the Catalan club having failed in pursuits of Nico Williams and Rafael Leao.

The England winger has been the subject of interest from Barcelona in the past, but his current deal at Old Trafford runs until 2028 and he is seen as an important member of the squad by Ineos and Erik ten Hag.

Newcastle continue search for central defenders

13:40 , Chris Wilson

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle have extended their search for a central defender by enquiring about Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

In addition, Sky report that the Magpies have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over defender Edmond Tapsoba.

It is thought that both players would cost less than Marc Guehi, though a move for the England international remains open.

Liverpool keen on Hincapie?

13:30 , Chris Wilson

Reports abroad are linking Liverpool with a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié, who can play either at centre-back or left-back.

The Reds would reportedly face competition from Spurs and Atletico for the Ecuadorian’s signature.

Liverpool remain the only premier League side not to make a signing so far this summer, though they look to be on the brink of agreeing a deal for Valencia ‘keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Chelsea sign Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid

13:23 , Mike Jones

Joao Felix has completed a return to Chelsea rejoining the Blues on a permanent transfer in a deal which could rise in excess of £46m.

The 24-year-old spent six months on-loan at Stamford Bridge in the 2022/23 season and scored four times in 20 appearances.

His return came after a long-running transfer saga which saw Chelsea negotiate a deal to send midfielder Conor Gallagher in the opposite direction with a move to Atletico Madrid.

The Portugal forward has signed a seven-year contract and becomes the latest addition to Chelsea’s unbelievably huge squad.

Arsenal latest

13:20 , Chris Wilson

Arsenal seem to be moving forward in their deal for Mikel Merino, which was labelled as “just a matter of time” by Fabrizio Romano.

In addition, the Gunners are looking at Espanyol ‘keeper Joan García as a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, who could be on his way to Wolves.

Mikel Arteta’s side continue to be linked with a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, though that move looks increasingly unlikely as the window nears an end.

Arsenal are hoping to offload some players too, with Eddie Nketiah the subject of interest from Nottingham Forest.

Man United latest

13:05 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United hope to oversee at least five more exits this summer, with Facundo Pellistri soon to join Panathinaikos and a deal for Hannibal Mejbri to join Burnley also in the works.

In addition, there are deals for Scott McTominay, Will Fish and perhaps Jadon Sancho on the cards.

United have also offered Christian Eriksen to Ajax, and they are hoping for at least £5m.

United still hope to agree a deal with PSG for Manuel Ugarte too – likely a loan with obligation to buy. The Red Devils are reportedly still considering a move for a left-back too, with Ben Chillwell mentioned among targets.

Merino move “a matter of time"

12:55 , Chris Wilson

Fabrizio Roman has claimed that Arsenal’s move for Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino is “just [a] matter of time”, with the Spaniard still sitting out of training with the Basque club.

As reported by The Independent, Arsenal’s first offer of just over €30m was rejected by the San Sebastian-based club.

Italy round-up

12:40 , Chris Wilson

Juventus continue to be one of the most active clubs in Serie A, with the Bianconeri looking to offload Federico Chiesa before completing a deal for Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners and Fiorentina’s Nico Gonzalez. French defender Pierre Kalulu arrived in Turin for his medical this morning, while Daniele Rugani has been loaned to Ajax for one season.

AC Milan have offloaded Kalulu to a direct rival, but one player the refuse to sell is Rafa Leao. In addition, the Rossoneri have agreed a deal for Ajax’s Silvano Vos, a 19-year-od defensive midfielder.

Napoli are close to announcing a deal for Benfica’s David Neres, and are looking to complete a deal for Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku too – that would ideally be a loan with obligation to buy, with Victor Osimhen potentially going the other way. Reports also suggest that the Partenopei are stepping up their hunt for Scott McTominay.

Defending champions Inter Milan have been quieter in the market, having rejected the chance to sign Paulo Dybala. They have been heavily linked to Independiente Rivadavia centre-back Tomás Palacios, and are reportedly considering a move for free agent Adrien Rabiot.

In addition, one of Marko Arnautovic or Joaquin Correa are expected to leave the club this summer.

Spain round-up

12:20 , Chris Wilson

Atletico Madrid have continued their impressive window, adding Conor Gallagher to the signings of Julian Alvarez, former Villarreal striker Alexander Sorloth (who was the second top-scorer in La Liga last season) and Euro 2024 winner Robin Le Normand.

Real Madrid remain inactive in the market, with Ancelotti saying the squad is closed and the only rumour coming from the club regarding the sale of Nico Paz.

Barcelona continue to be linked with a dozen players, but their financial situation is proving problematic, having been priced out of moves for luis Diaz, Nico Williams and Rafael Leao. Most rumours are linking their players with moves away – one such player is Frenkie de Jong.

Federico Chiesa is the lastest winger to be linked with the Blaugrana, but sporting director Deco has said that he expects more signings to arrive.

In terms of outgoings, Brazilian forward Vitor Roque is in line to join Real Betis on loan.

Perhaps the most high-profile sale remains the potential departure of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad to Arsenal.

Nottingham Forest repotedly close to deal for Nketiah

12:05 , Chris Wilson

Despite that earlier report of a Forest bid for Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, The Athletic reports that Forest are close to agreeing a fee for Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah.

David Ornstein says that “talks also progress on personal terms”, with Forest having “seen an opening bid worth £25million including add-ons rejected”.

The report adds that Nketiah is Forest’s top target in that position, with Arsenal “looking for a figure more in the region of £30-35million”.

Ten players Chelsea could sell to fund summer spending spree

11:55 , Chris Wilson

With yet another young forward seemingly on their way to the club, Chelsea will now look to shear their swollen squad down to something resembling a suitable size.

The impending arrival of Joao Felix would be a ninth signing of another busy summer of incomings at Stamford Bridge as Todd Boehly’s consortium again bid to prove themselves as masters of the market after overseeing 12th and sixth-placed finishes in their first two seasons at the club.

Enzo Maresca must now decide which players to prioritise and which players he is willing to part with ahead of the end of the transfer window as the club seek to recoup some cash and cut down his senior playing group.

Like all Premier League clubs, Chelsea will have to submit a 25-player squad after deadline day on Friday August 30, with eight of those players classed as homegrown but no limit on registering players aged 21 or under.

Here are ten squad members who could be headed for the exit before the end of the month:

Liverpool latest

11:40 , Chris Wilson

The main story around Liverpool is the deal involving Valencia ‘keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who seems to be on his way to Anfield as reported by The Independent – with a loan likely in his first season, at least.

As with all of the big six clubs though, rumours persist around a number of players – it’s up to fans to consider which ones are concrete!

Names linked to the Reds in the last few days include Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio, Palace’s Marc Guehi and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon.

Liverpool continue to look to offload players too, with Joe Gomez being looked at by Villa and Palace, and Sepp van den Berg locked in a mini-saga between Brentford and Bayer Leverkusen.

Forest launch another bid for Feyenoord striker

11:25 , Chris Wilson

Fabrizio Romano with another report – this time it’s on Nottingham Forest, who have launched an audacious £30m bid for Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

After an initial €25m bid was rejected, Forest have upped their offer as they hope to tempt the Mexican away from De Kuip.

Forest are also interested in Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah if they can’t get the Gimenez deal over the line.

City consider move for Celtic striker

11:15 , Chris Wilson

The Athletic’s Sam Lee is reporting that Manchester City are considering a move for Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi.

He adds that City’s main focus is on finalising the deal for Gundogan before they decide whether to go for a striker as a replacement for Julian Alvarez.

Furuhashi scored in Celtic’s 4-3 win over City in preseason.

Another player out the door at Chelsea

11:05 , Chris Wilson

Another player has left Chelsea, though this one is a loan with option to buy.

Bashir Humphreys has left the London club to join Burnley on loan, with the Clarets having an option to buy at the end of the season for £12m plus around £2m in add-ons.

United offered loan with obligation to buy for Ugarte – but PSG’s valuation remains too high

10:55 , Chris Wilson

The Daily Mail reports that PSG have offered a loan with obligation to buy deal to Manchester United for Manuel Ugarte, allowing him to join the club this season with United agreeing to pay £51m for the Uruguayan next summer.

However, United deem that valuation too high from PSG – they value Ugarte at around £42m, while PSG want to recoup the entire fee they paid to Sporting.

Ugarte made 37 appearances for the French champions last season, but was left out of the squad for their Ligue 1 opener against Le Havre last week.

Conor Gallagher signed by Atletico Madrid

Newcastle haven’t given up on Guehi yet

10:45 , Chris Wilson

Sky Sports report that Newcastle still haven’t given up hope of signing Marc Guehi, despite having multiple bids turned down.

The Tyneside club are hopeful of reaching a compromise with Palace, though their most recent bid of £65m (£60m + £5m) bid was rejected last week. Reports suggest that Palace value Guehi at a level closer to £65m plus £5m in add-ons.

Newcastle are assessing other options in case the move fails to materialise, though it is understood that Fulham’s imminent deal for Andersen won’t affect Palace’s stance on Guehi.

Palace submit bid for Lacroix

10:35 , Chris Wilson

Further to that comment on Palace’s interest in Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the south London side have nowmade a bid for the French defender.

The proposed deal is reportedly worth £12m as a fixed fee plus £2m in add-ons.

Romano adds that “Lacroix wants to leave Wolfsburg and has only one year left on his contract, while Glasner considers him among top targets”.

Conor Gallagher signs for Atletico Madrid

10:25 , Chris Wilson

Plenty of exclusives dropping from Fabrizio Romano today. Just before the Gundogan announcement, he reported that Conor Gallagher has completed his move to Atletico Madrid.

Sky Sports reported earlier in the day that Gallagher had trained with Atleti ahead of the move, and Romano has now said that Gallagher “signs in as new Atlético Madrid player from Chelsea”.

He adds that a fee of €42m euros has been agreed, and it’s “all sealed now”.

Gundogan set to seal return to Manchester City

10:18 , Chris Wilson

It looks like Ilkay Gundogan has sealed his return to Manchester City this summer, as Fabrizio Romano has given the move the ‘here we go’.

Romano reports that Gundogan will leave Barca on a free, joining his old club in a deal running until summer of 2025.

He adds that an “agreement [was] reached after positive talks in last 48 hours, and Pep Guardiola said yes, as revealed yesterday”.

Brentford remain firm on asking price for Toney

10:15 , Chris Wilson

Sky Sports are also reporting that Brentford are “standing firm on their price for Ivan Toney”.

Al Ahli approached Brentford before the weekend to make an offer, and talks are ongoing, but the Saudi club are still some way from Brentford’s valuation.

As reported by The Independent, no Premier League clubs have entered talks over the England striker.

Thomas Frank had decided the England international should not be involved in their opening win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Pellistri to join Greek side

10:00 , Chris Wilson

Sky Sports report that Panathinaikos have agreed a ‘deal in principle’ with Manchester United for Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri.

Raheem Sterling left out of Chelsea squad for the second time in a week

09:30 , Sonia Twigg

Raheem Sterling has been left out of Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea squad for their Europa Conference League play off.

Chelsea are due to face Servette in the first leg on Thursday, but there was no place for Sterling on the match list submitted to Uefa.

However, Ben Chilwell, Welsey Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo were also not on the list, the BBC have reported.

The first leg takes place at Stamford Bridge, with the second scheduled for August 29 in Switzerland.

Sterling was not included in Maresca’s squad for their Premier League opening defeat against Manchester City, and was left seeking “clarity” over the decision.

Manchester United make fresh plan to coax transfer target Manuel Ugarte from PSG

Tuesday 20 August 2024 21:00 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United could attempt to take Manuel Ugarte on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in a bid to bring their top midfield target to Old Trafford.

United’s preference remains to buy the Uruguay international, who cost PSG €60m last year but there remains a gap in their valuations of the 23-year-old, as there has been all summer.

But while United have considered three cheaper midfielders, one has already moved this summer, with a second set to follow as the Premier League club continue to focus on Ugarte. They may see if PSG would accept a loan instead of a permanent deal as, after spending over £150m this summer, they look to make a fifth signing within their budget.

Liverpool close in on Giorgi Mamardashvili - but Arne Slot’s first potential signing won’t play this year

Tuesday 20 August 2024 20:00 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool are closing in a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili as they are preparing to make Valencia goalkeeper the first signing of Arne Slot’s reign.

Mamardashvili is not expected to arrive at Anfield until the summer of 2025 but Liverpool have made progress in their attempts to sign the 23-year-old.

Alisson is set to remain first-choice goalkeeper for this season, but the Georgia international could represent some succession planning as Liverpool look to the future.

Jamie Carragher tells Chelsea: ‘Stop buying players’

Tuesday 20 August 2024 19:00 , Chris Wilson

Jamie Carragher did not hold back on his criticism of Chelsea, urging the club to ‘stop signing’ new players.

It was reported on Monday that Chelsea had agreed a deal to re-sign Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid for a fee believed to be around £46m, with the Portuguese footballer becoming their 10th signing of the window so far.

The deal would allow Conor Gallagher to move in the other direction, despite the important role he played in Chelsea’s team last season.

“Chelsea have just got to stop buying players, and players have got to stop signing for Chelsea,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

“If I was a player I don’t know why you would sign for Chelsea, the only reason you would sign is because someone – your agent – might say ‘You’re getting a seven-year deal and that’s guaranteed money for seven years.

Tuesday 20 August 2024 18:30 , Chris Wilson

Raheem Sterling is requesting talks about his future at Chelsea after he was left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend.

The England forward was not even on the bench and was surprised to be left out of the squad, with 18-year-old summer signing Marc Guiu one of Maresca’s preferred options.

Sterling had previously started in pre-season training, but the £44m signing found himself out in the cold.

Manchester United transfer news: Fulham back in for McTominay, Ugarte latest and more

Tuesday 20 August 2024 18:15 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United may have won their opening match of the 2024/25 Premier League season, but it was clear to anyone watching that the club need some more signings if they are to make the top four.

United grabbed a deserved win against Fulham courtesy of new signing Joshua Zirkee, though their performance was laboured at times and they gifted the away side chances that a more accomplished team may have taken.

As with last season, plenty of the focus was on the midfield, with an ageing Casemiro clearly unable to play 40-odd matches per season nowadays.

The 28-year-old, who spent a season at Newcastle earlier in his career, is out of contract at the Basque club next summer, and could thus be allowed to leave if their demands are met.

Liverpool may not have made any new signings this summer but they are set to be in for a busy final few days as the transfer deadline looms.

Arne Slot got off to the perfect start as Liverpool’s new manager following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, overseeing a 2-0 win at newly promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Slot has suggested he is still looking for additions to the squad, although he insisted after the win that he was happy with his current crop of players.

Tuesday 20 August 2024 17:10 , Chris Wilson

Wolves maintain an interest in Arsenal ‘keeper Aaron Ramsdale, and there are also reports linking them to Ajax winger Carlos Forbs as a replacement for Pedro Neto.

City round-up

Tuesday 20 August 2024 16:58 , Chris Wilson

As well as that potential move for Ilkay Gundogan, Man City were said to be looking at moves for Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace and Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle, though those rumours have gone quiet in recent days.

The club are not looking for any big-name or big-money signings, despite the departure of Julian Alvarez and an injury to Oscar Bobb, though they are looking at a variety of potential experienced striker and midfield signings.

Few City players have been linked with a move away, though both Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo are being linked with moves away to Saudi Arabia. City could potentially sign a full-back if either of those two left.

Five major Premier League transfers that could happen before deadline day

Tuesday 20 August 2024 16:45 , Chris Wilson

The clock is ticking on the transfer window with less than two weeks remaining for Premier League clubs to strengthen their squads.

Lukaku and Osimhen to switch clubs?

Tuesday 20 August 2024 16:20 , Chris Wilson

There have been plenty of links between Chelsea and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who was pivotal in the club’s Scudetto win in 2023.

The Nigerian striker is contracted to Napoli until 2026, and is valued at around £100m, though it is not known how much Chelsea are willing to pay.

Chelsea’s potential deal for the 25-year-old is supposedly separate to a potential deal for Romelu Lukaku to head the other way. Lukaku has played at both Roma and Inter, and would be keen to stay in Serie A.

However, Napoli would prefer a loan with an obligation to buy rather than a straight sale. Sky Italia are reporting that the Italian club would be offering a loan fee of around €5m, with an additional fee of €25m next summer.

Chelsea signed Lukaku from Inter Milan for £97.5m in 2021.

Liverpool close in on Giorgi Mamardashvili - but Arne Slot’s first potential signing won’t play this year

Tuesday 20 August 2024 16:07 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool are closing in a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili as they are preparing to make Valencia goalkeeper the first signing of Arne Slot’s reign.

Mamardashvili is not expected to arrive at Anfield until the summer of 2025 but Liverpool have made progress in their attempts to sign the 23-year-old.

Alisson is set to remain first-choice goalkeeper for this season, but the Georgia international could represent some succession planning as Liverpool look to the future.

Mamardashvili is eight years younger than the Brazilian, who has been an automatic choice when fit since his arrival from Roma for £65m in 2019. The Georgia No1 made the most saves at Euro 2024, with 29, as he helped his nation reach the last 16. He also kept 13 clean sheets in LaLiga last season.

Brentford firm on Ivan Toney transfer fee - despite no takers in Premier League

Tuesday 20 August 2024 15:41 , Chris Wilson

Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli are currently the only club willing to meet Brentford‘s £60m valuation of Ivan Toney, in a transfer saga that may well go to the final days of the window.

The forward was left out of the club’s opening game of the season, a 2-1 win at home to Crystal Palace, with the uncertainty over his future cited as the reason.

This did surprise some figures in the market and involved in such talks, as no transfer is seen as imminent. Toney himself is still weighing up where next. Chelsea and Manchester United retain interest, but not at £60m for a player with a year left in his contract. The two clubs have internally spoken about deals but, as reported by the Independent last week, that would likely have to involve a loan with an obligation to buy or an arrangement other than just paying £60m up front.

Joao Felix has completed his Chelsea medical, according to multiple reports, and is set for a move to Stamford Bridge in a permanent transfer worth around £46m, on a six year contract with an option for a seventh year – in classic Chelsea fashion.

Conor Gallagher is heading in the other direction for £38m.

Man Utd latest

Tuesday 20 August 2024 14:30 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri is set to join Greek side Panathinaikos, with the Uruguayan close to completing an £8.5m move to the Athens-based side.

Pellistri would be reunited with former Uruguay manager Diego Alonso.

Jadon Sancho is another winger who could leave United, with reports linking him to PSG, Juventus and even Chelsea, though it looks like he will stay despite his well-publicised row with Erik ten Hag last season.

Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth has called it “one to watch”, with “a number of European clubs exploring” a potential deal.

The Athletic are reporting that Christian Eriksen has been offered to Ajax, with United asking for at least £5m.

In addition, Sky Sports are reporting that Burnley are interested in a potential deal for Hannibal Mejbri, who has entered the final year of his deal.

Newcastle round-up

Tuesday 20 August 2024 14:15 , Chris Wilson

Newcastle have a protracted summer saga of their own as they chase the signature of England defender Marc Guehi.

Palace recently rejected a £60m bid for their star defender, and it remains to be seen whether the Magpies will make another bid.

The club are exploring alternative targets, and have shown interest in Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw.

The club’s other priority at the start of the window was a right-winger, even though a potential deal for the sale of Miguel Almiron collapsed last week.

According to The Athletic, the Magpies are keeping an eye on Anthony Elanga, Noni Madueke and Nico Gonzalez of Fiorentina.

In terms of outgoings, Martin Dubravka is still expected to leave, while Odysseas Vlachodimos could go out on loan.

The future of both Almiron and Kieran Trippier remains uncertain, while Callum Wilson looked set to leave, but a back injury complicated his potential exit.

Spurs round-up

Tuesday 20 August 2024 14:00 , Chris Wilson

Spurs look to have done the majority of their business now, after collecting £25m for Oliver Skipp and £15m for Emerson Royal, and signing both Wilson Odobert and Dominic Solanke.

According to The Athletic, the club retain an interest in signing a “dynamic number 8”, having been linked with Villa’s Jacob Ramsey earlier in the summer, and they also have a “historic interest” in Conor Gallagher, though he looks to be set to join Atletico Madrid.

The rest of their summer business may be sales – the club are looking to offload Sergio Reguilon and Manor Solomon, with Giovani Lo Celso also marked for a potential move away.

Rumours from around Europe

Tuesday 20 August 2024 13:50 , Chris Wilson

As is the case every summer, the big clubs around Europe continue to be linked with an impossible number of deals.

Barcelona, with their ever-present financial problems, have been linked with sales of Frenkie de Jong and Ilkay Gundogan, as well as the purchase of Federico Chiesa, Nico Williams or Rafael Leao. They have already signed Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo so far this summer.

PSG have recently signed promising Rennes winger Désiré Doué, though reports are currently linking the French side with Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman, formerly of Everton.

Another Atalanta player who could be on the move is Teun Koopmeiners, who has been heavily linked to Juventus having missed the Uefa Super Cup match.

Juventus have also been linked two wingers – Fiorentina’s Nico Gonzalez and Porto’s Francisco Conceicao.

As for Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti has previously insisted that the squad is “closed”.

Who are the most expensive signings in the Premier League so far?

Tuesday 20 August 2024 13:35 , Chris Wilson

Tottenham’s purchase of Dominic Solanke is perhaps the headline signature of the window in the Premier League, and it currently stands as the most expensive too, at a total value of around £65m.

Manchester United’s capture of Leny Yoro is the second most valuable arrival in the window so far, with the total deal valued at almost £60m with add-ons.

By far the biggest transfer of the window this summer is actually a departure – City’s sale of Julian Alvarez was valued at a total of £82m.

Biggest arrivals so far:

Dominic Solanke – Bournemouth to Spurs – £65m

Leny Yoro – Lille to Man United – £59m

Amadou Onana – Everton to Villa – £55m

Pedro Neto – Wolves to Chelsea – £54m

Ricardo Calafiori – Bologna to Arsenal – £42m

Max Kilman – Wolves to West Ham – £40m

Manchester United make fresh plan to coax transfer target Manuel Ugarte from PSG

Tuesday 20 August 2024 13:20 , Chris Wilson

Manchester United could attempt to take Manuel Ugarte on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in a bid to bring their top midfield target to Old Trafford.

The FA Cup winners and the French champions have had very different valuations of the Uruguay international, who cost PSG €60m last year.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Joao Felix, despite Diego Simeone suggesting he still has a future at Atletico Madrid.

Felix spent part of the 2022-23 season on loan at Stamford Bridge and has been linked with a move, with the Spanish club reportedly wanting £51.4m for the forward.

But Atletico included him in their squad for their opening La Liga match against Villarreal.

Arsenal to lodge another bid for Mikel Merino?

Tuesday 20 August 2024 12:50 , Chris Wilson

Arsenal’s pursuit of Mikel Merino could yet end in success as the Real Sociedad midfielder edges closer to completing a move to London.

Merino, part of Spain’s successful Euro 2024 squad this summer, has been a key target for Mikel Arteta as the Arsenal manager looks to build a squad capable of challenging again for the Premier League.

The 28-year-old, who spent a season at Newcastle earlier in his career, is out of contract at the Basque club next summer, and could thus be allowed to leave if their demands are met.

The Independent reported last week that an initial offer of €30m was knocked back, with Real Sociedad hoping to recoup at least €35m (£29.9m).

But reports in Spain and elsewhere suggest progress may have been made towards an agreement after Merino was left out of the Real Sociedad side that lost 2-1 to Rayo Vallecano in their La Liga opener.

Will Scott McTominay leave Man Utd?

Tuesday 20 August 2024 12:35 , Chris Wilson

Fulham had reportedly re-opened talks with United over the signing of Scott McTominay, though the south London club’s pursuit of Sander Berge may well end that mini transfer saga.

Napoli have reportedly targeted McTominay too, but are unlikely to be able to afford the midfielder unless they sort the sale of Victor Osimhen, who is reportedly Chelsea’s main striker target.

United are understood to be happy to keep McTominay, and will only consider offers if he makes it clear he wants to leave, so it looks likely that the Scotland international will stay at Old Trafford.

Wolves keen on Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale

Tuesday 20 August 2024 10:40 , Karl Matchett

They have Jose Sa but are keen to move on, with a loan with an option to buy the initial proposal sent to the Gunners, reports David Ornstein.

Wolves would pay most of Ramsdale’s salary under the current terms, but Arsenal want a permanent sale rather than initial loan.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah are the contenders it appears, with Gomez having been reportedly one of the options as a makeweight in a deal earlier this summer for Anthony Gordon to head to Anfield - that move broke down but perhaps Gomez can still make the trade.

The versatile performer was left out of the Reds’ squad on the opening weekend at Ipswich, while Guehi captained Palace and Chalobah is not part of Enzo Maresca’s plans.

Ipswich land Cajuste on loan from Napoli

Tuesday 20 August 2024 09:20 , Reuters

Ipswich Town have signed midfielder Jens Cajuste from Napoli on a season-long loan deal, the newly promoted Premier League club announced late on Monday.

The 25-year-old, who has earned 23 caps for Sweden, has made 26 appearances for Serie A side Napoli after joining from French club Stade Reims last year.

Cajuste, who won the Danish Superliga title with Midtjylland before moving to France, was glad to complete the move.

“It took a little while with the negotiations but I’m finally here and I’m very excited," he said in a statement.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna said Cajuste's arrival boosted his options in the middle of the park.

“He gives us another different profile to our midfield and puts us in a strong position in that department," McKenna said.

Ipswich face Manchester City in their next Premier League match on Saturday, after suffering a 2-0 home defeat by Liverpool in their season opener.

Man United still keen on more sales

Tuesday 20 August 2024 09:10 , Karl Matchett

As well as trying to bring in Ugarte, United want to make sales this month to remove some of the bloat around Erik ten Hag’s preferred squad.

Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Scott McTominay remain among those they will consider selling - the latter has already seen a bid from Fulham rejected, though they are set to come back with another offer soon.

United have spent over £150m this summer so far, with the likes of Willy Kambwala, Mason Greenwood, Alvaro Fernandez and Aaron Wan-Bissaka offsetting that somewhat in sales.
