Tower Hill record-setter leads All-State girls swimming team
On Feb. 25, Lainey Mullins matched what she had done the previous year at the DIAA Girls Swimming and Diving Championships.
So it was no surprise to see Tower Hill senior named the Delaware High School Swimming Coaches Association’s Swimmer of the Meet for the second straight year.
Mullins, a University of Virginia signee, won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles for the third consecutive season. She finished the 200 in 1:47.69, tying the state record she set in 2022. Her 500 time of 4:46.96 was just 0.86 of a second away from the state record held by Tatnall’s Nicole Vernon since 2011.
Tower Hill came up short of a fourth straight team title, finishing third behind Ursuline and Charter of Wilmington. But Mullins left the University of Delaware’s Rawstrom Natatorium as a 10-time individual champion, winning two events at the state meet for five consecutive years.
Two other double winners join Mullins at the top of the girls All-State first team. Charter’s Georgia Colborn swept the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Brandywine’s Rachel Bockrath was fastest in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Bockrath lowered her own state record in the 100 to 49.32.
BEST OF THE BOYS Double winner from Conrad leads All-State boys swimming team
The other three individual champs – Wilmington Friends’ Kira Agne (200 individual medley), Sussex Academy’s Gracie Maughan (100 breastroke) and Newark Charter’s Madelyn Hiller (1-meter diving) are also part of the first team.
Other All-State first-team selections include Ursuline’s Caitlin Horning, Mary Kate Keegan and Natalie Johnson, Conrad’s Katelyn Fitzgerald and Alyssa Napier, Charter’s Alexandra Phillips, Saint Mark’s Rowan O’Donoghue, Padua’s Madison Testa and Tower Hill’s Grace Gilbert.
