Toronto Maple Leafs Place Marshall Rifai And Matt Murray On Waivers

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed goaltender Matt Murray and defenseman Marshall Rifai on waivers, per TSN's Chris Johnston.

Murray missed most of 2023-24 season after undergoing hip surgery, he appeared in three games down the stretch for the Toronto Marlies. He last played in the NHL in 2022-23, finishing with a 14-8-2 record, .903 SV% and 3.01 GAA with the Maple Leafs.

The 31-year-old signed a one-year, $875,000 contract with the Maple Leafs this summer.

The Marlies crease is crowded with Dennis Hildeby, Vyacheslav Peksa, Artur Akhtyamov, and Jon Gillies all around, but the veteran Murray should see regular starts.

Rifai played two NHL games last season and recorded 19 points in 57 AHL games with the Marlies.

Should the players clear waivers Rifai will likely play big minutes with the Marlies, after a strong training camp it will not be a surprise if he gets into games with the Leafs this season.

He signed a two-year extension with the Maple Leafs in September that runs through the 2026-27 season.

The Marlies open their season Oct. 12 at home against the San Diego Gulls.
