The Dak Prescott-led Cowboys have fielded one of the NFL’s most tepid offenses this season, leaving many Dallas fans pining for the days of Tony Romo.

With the smothering Jacksonville Jaguars defense visiting Dallas on Sunday, things were expected to get worse before they got better.

Romo watches as Dak finds his stride

Prescott must have heard the noise and that Romo was in town. With Romo in the booth to call the game with Jim Nantz for CBS, Prescott and the Cowboys posted what may have been the most stunning half of football this season, taking a 24-0 first-half lead on the Jaguars en route to a dominant 40-7 win.

Prescott and wide receiver Cole Beasley feasted on the Jaguars’ top-ranked pass defense.

Prescott threw for 151 first-half yards and two touchdowns, both of them to Beasley, who hauled in six catches for 79 yards.

Prescott finished with 183 yards in the air while Beasley totaled 101 receiving yards when Dallas milked the clock on the ground in the second half. Prescott made an impact on the rushing attack too, finishing with 82 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Romo’s high praise for Prescott

Romo, of course, was impressed.

“Dallas has been waiting for this kind of start to a football game, and this is exactly how you want to come out against a great defense like Jacksonville,” Romo said after the Cowboys opened a 10-0 lead.

When Prescott hit Beasley for a first down on third-and-11 early in the second quarter, Romo credited Prescott directly for his performance.

“Dak’s off to a perfect start in this football game,” Romo said.

When Prescott hit Beasley in a tight window over the middle for 18 yards on third-and-5 to set up the last score of the half, Romo had high praise for the Cowboys quarterback.

“This is Dak’s best play of the day, and he’s had a lot of good ones,” Romo said. “Dak hangs in that pocket, and throws it at the last second. Those are the kind of plays that separate you.”

Prescott has taken a lot of blame for a disappointing start to the Cowboys season. On Sunday, he rightfully received credit from his predecessor in a shocking performance against the Jaguars.
