Tom Brady offers to help NFL Network's Rich Eisen get faster for charity run
NFL Network host Rich Eisen has done his now-traditional 40-yard dash on the final day of the NFL scouting combine, in a tailored suit and custom Under Armour cleats.
As you can see in the video above, the 49-year-old Eisen ran a hand-timed 6.00 seconds, right in line with where he’s been over the last several years, though not a new best for him; he ran 5.94 seconds in 2016.
‘I guarantee you will break your record’
The NFL posted the video of Eisen’s run on Instagram — he did the 40 three times this year, getting his best time on the last — and a certain quarterback took notice and made him an offer.
Under the video, Tom Brady wrote, “Hey @richeisen come train at @tb12sports before next year combine and I guarantee you will break your record.”
Eisen wrote back, “Well, that’s a year. And quite a guarantee.”
Though Brady is frequently the butt of jokes for not being fleet of foot, his official time in the 40 at his combine in 2000 was 5.28 seconds.
If one day Brady ever does retire, he’s already laid the groundwork for his post-playing career with TB12 Sports, which touts a comprehensive approach to health and wellness.
It does have a center, but it’s adjacent to Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, so commuting there for training might be tough for the Los Angeles-based Eisen. Of course, Brady also has a home in Los Angeles, so maybe the facility will have to send a team to the West Coast next year?
Big names, big donations
What began as a joke between Eisen and Terrell Davis in 2005 — Eisen says during a break in recording that year he asked Davis how fast he thought Eisen would be in the 40, running in his suit, and he went down to the field and did it — has grown considerably.
In 2015, Eisen began raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through Run Rich Run. On Monday, he said donations this year had already topped $1.1 million.
His NFLN colleague, former head coach Steve Mariucci, surprised Eisen on camera on Friday and gave him a $5,000 donation check, and challenged every NFL head coach and assistant coach, all of them on hand in Indianapolis for the combine, to donate.
On Sunday, he was surprised by Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who approached Eisen while he was on air to hand him a check.
