Timpson's 10th career double-double propels FSU women's basketball over Miami
A rollercoaster game between Florida State women's basketball (16-7, 7-4 ACC) and Miami (14-7, 4-6) was stabilized off the hot hand of FSU forward Makayla Timpson.
She finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season, guiding the Seminoles to a 75-68 win over the Hurricanes on Saturday in front of 2,227 fans at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
"Games against Miami we know are always exciting and we love," FSU head coach Brooke Wyckoff said. "It's always nice to play them at home in front of an awesome crowd and come out with a win. I'm so proud of a lot of our individual performances, but especially in the fourth quarter as a team.
"We locked down as a team and focused on both ends."
Timpson has been one of the Seminoles' consistent producers this season. Her 10th double-double of the season ties her for 24th nationally and is ranked third in the ACC behind North Carolina's Alyssa Ustby (11) and Pittsburgh's Liatu King (12).
She also recorded a block on the day, giving her 58 on the year, which ties her for seventh nationally and leads the ACC.
Following recent losses to Syracuse, Virginia and Duke, fourth-quarter play has been a huge emphasis for FSU. In its win over Georgia Tech, the Seminoles outscored the Yellow Jackets 27-12 and against Miami it has a 19-11 scoring edge.
For the Seminoles, it's been less about winning and more about the way they're winning. The focus has been getting back to what they know.
"After those losses and we've learned so much, and the players, individually and collectively, have learned to ride the ship, do the things we do and get back to being us," Wyckoff said. "We were able to win doing that. We didn't have to change anything or rewrite the script. We're getting back to being us."
Confidence building has been the key in getting back into a groove for FSU. The Miami performance saw a handful of players, alongside Timpson show out.
Guard O'Mariah Gordon threw down 16 points for her 20th double-figure scoring game of the season and guard Ta'Niya Latson recorded her sixth straight double-figure scoring game, finishing with 15 points.
As a team, the Seminoles shot 45% from the field, hitting 26-of-57 shots and 76.5% from the free throw line, shooting 13-of-17. Both Latson and Timpson shot 100% from the free-throw line
"We've just been trying to build our confidence back," Gordon said. "Like coach said, we do the same things. We don't do anything special. Each person just has to do their own job and not try to be anyone else. If we're trying to be anyone else, we're not going to be who we are."
FSU forced Miami into foul trouble late as three players had three or more fouls and as a team, the Hurricanes had committed 16 to the Seminoles eight. Four different Miami players finished with 12 or more, led by Lemyah Hylton with 15.
"They [Miami] were chirping a bit, but that's always a thing when we play Miami," Gordon said. "It honestly makes the game fun and it makes it competitive. That's what it's all about."
The Seminoles improve to 16-7 on the year and 7-4 in ACC play. They will face Pittsburgh (7-15, 1-8) on the road on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Panthers have lost three straight, falling to No. 14 Notre Dame on the road, 78-53, on Sunday
"We want to stay the course," Wyckoff said. "Every game presents a new challenge across the ball from us. It's a different team, a different style, a different defensive look and we'll be in a different gym. Can we just stay the course and do what we do, and not be taken out by what another team does."
"As simple and cliche as that sounds, if we continue to do that we can be really, really elite."
