Time to pay up? Tua Tagovailoa sizzling hot during Dolphins minicamp

MAMI GARDENS -- Tua Tagovailoa is hoping to work out a lucrative, long-term extension with the Dolphins.

Tuesday's minicamp performance didn't hurt his cause. Quite the contrary.

Before the workout, coach Mike McDaniel appeared to suggest Tagovailoa might see limited action.

"He's going to be participating, but the the depth and really across the board what he's doing, that will be more up to him," McDaniel said.

Tagovailoa clearly came ready for action -- at least in seven-on-seven drills.

Here's how it went:

  • Tagovailoa started strong on a series of throws in seven-on-seven throws from the 7-yard line. He never cooled off, either.

  • After hitting De'Von Achane for a score, Tagovailoa hit Tanner Conner for two short TDs. He found Achane for another TD, a pattern that kept repeating itself in drills.

  • Tagovailoa threw a beautiful rainbow to Jaylen Waddle in the corner of the end zone.

  • Tagovailoa hit Jody Fortson for a TD.

  • Tagovailoa finally threw an incompletion -- a drop by Mathew Sexton.

  • Tagovailoa lobbed one to River Cracraft, who made an outstanding catch in the corner of the end zone.

  • Later, Tagovailoa hit Malik Washington in traffic for a short gain.

  • He then looked to Braylon Sanders over the middle, but Sanders dropped it.

  • Tagovailoa did not participate, however, when the Dolphins went to team drills with 11-on-11.

  • Not spotted working with the team (although most if not all were getting rehab): Teair Tart, Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, David Long, Cameron Goode, Nik Needham on defense; Salvon Ahmed, Chris Brooks, Je'Quan Burton, Tahj Washington, Terron Armstead, Odell Beckham Jr. on offense. McDaniel said everyone expected to attend did so.

  • Phillips, obviously responding to reports last week that he was still limping following Achilles surgery, broke into a brief jog in front of reporters in a moment of levity to show where he is in rehab.

  • RB Jeff Wilson wore the orange jersey as practice player of the day.

Five draft picks sign, including Jaylen Wright

  • Before practice, the Dolphins announced the signing of five draft picks, with the highest pick being running back Jaylen Wright.

The signings leave the top two picks, linebacker Chop Robinson and offensive tackle Patrick Paul, unsigned.

Also signing were linebacker Mohamed Kamara (fifth round), safety Patrick McMorris (sixth), receiver Malik Washington (sixth) and receiver Tahj Washington (sixth).
