Three observations from Texas' win over Arizona: Shaylee Gonzales has a sweet homecoming

The No. 5 Texas women's basketball team survived a late scare vs. Arizona on Wednesday night to improve to 11-0 with an 88-75 win on the road in Tuscon.

It wasn't the Longhorns' best work, as a 23-point lead in the third quarter got whittled down to 13 in the fourth. Regardless, the team was able to get a tough road win, with guard Rori Harmon leading the scoring with 19 and Taylor Jones adding 16 as the second leading scorer.

"At the end of the day, you take a win on the road against the Pac-12 school," coach Vic Schaefer said in the postgame presser.

Here are three observations from Texas' win.

Shaylee Gonzales: Homecoming Hero

Shaylee Gonzales's return to her home state had a rough beginning. Two quick fouls sent her to the bench and with Madison Booker's rough start, Schaefer needed some points from his reserves.

He turned to Shay Holle and the guard answered his call. She finished the first half with eight points and two assists, and the Longhorns went into halftime with a 45-36 lead. Being able to lean on Holle when he did allowed Schaefer to preserve Gonzales for the second half when she got hot.

The guard finished with 12 points, all on 3-pointers. Her last attempt came in the fourth quarter on a crucial transition shot that helped ice the game.

"That's one of those. No, no, no, yes, you know, shots," Schaefer said. "To be here, play in front of her family is just really special. I know it's a special night for her."

4th quarter scares

Texas came out swinging in the second half, bludgeoning Arizona to build a 76-52 lead by the end of the third quarter. They even extended it to 25 with 7:39 left in the game.

Their next point came at 3:37, as Harmon made a single free throw to make the score 81-66. It didn't stop there, as the Wildcats cut the lead all the way to 81-70 before Gonzalez's clutch bucket at the 2-minute mark extended the lead to 14.

It wasn't just that Texas missed shots in the fourth quarter. It's that the misses were early shots as well. They took 15 shots in the fourth quarter vs. 12 for Arizona, with the obvious difference being the amount made.

"We took some really quick shots and when you're up 25, you don't need to be taking shots with, you know, 18 seconds on the shot clock," Schaefer said.

Madison Booker is in fact, a freshman

It wasn't the best night for Texas' star newcomer. She struggled with her shot throughout the game, making only six of her 18 attempts.

Sometimes, it's easy to forget that there will be growing pains for the freshman, who often plays with the maturity of a much older player. The budding point guard was playing in her first true road game and had her moments, including eight points in the third.

It was a weird night for Texas, but Harmon isn't worried about her underclassman. She knows that Booker will be fine.

"We still managed to win and she was a part of that so she must have did something right," Harmon said. "But she just needs more experience and more games underneath her and she'll be good."
