'Thank you for the Cup in 2020': Fans react to Columbus Crew firing coach Caleb Porter
After a 2-1 loss to Orlando City and an elimination from MLS playoff contention for the second-straight season, the Columbus Crew made a change, firing coach Caleb Porter Monday, less than 24 hours after the season-ending loss.
Despite leading the Crew to an MLS Cup in 2020, Porter failed to lead the team to the playoffs for two-straight seasons, leading to his departure along with assistant coaches Pablo Moreira, Tim Hanley, Eric Quill and Blair Gavin.
The Crew only lost eight games this season — the second-fewest of any team in the MLS — but won only 10 games with a league-leading 16 draws, finishing with 46 points and an eighth-place position in the Eastern Conference.

Here's how fans reacted to Porter's firing.
To one, the move was a bit 'poetic'
And on Columbus Day.
How poetic. https://t.co/BVzLXC2yRt— Alex Hoy (@hoy01) October 10, 2022
Many expected a move to be coming between Caleb Porter and the Columbus Crew
You hate seeing anyone lose their job but this is professional sports and results are what matters and this #Crew96 team has regressed the past two seasons even with a roster that should be competing for trophies. Wish him luck & also excited to see who they bring in. https://t.co/sPjxvSyel8

I was vocal about my desire for this to happen, but I really do appreciate Porter and the Cup that he helped us win. It was time for #Crew96 to move on, but I hope for the best from Caleb and his family.
Onwards. https://t.co/fIUGgx2icu— Chris Blain (@CHRlSBLAlN) October 10, 2022
It was a quick turnaround from the Columbus Crew's 2020 MLS Cup to Caleb Porter's firing
...that was fast.
Thank you for helping us get the Cup in '20. But this year showed that it's time to move on from complacency. https://t.co/s9IAZbg5jI— Bryce⁹⁴ (@superhamrick94) October 10, 2022
It wasn't the fact that the Columbus Crew missed the playoffs...
It wasn't just missing the playoffs, it was the way they did it. I wish him well and hope the Crew will get a coach that can take this team to the top.
