HOUSTON — Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire has agreed to a new contract, a six-year, $26.6 million deal that runs through the 2028 season.

The school announced the agreement Wednesday, hours before McGuire is scheduled to lead the Red Raiders against Mississippi in the Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium. The announcement said the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents has approved the contract.

McGuire is guaranteed $4.1 million in the first year of the deal with $100,000 annual increases that take it to $4.6 million in 2028. He also receives a pair of retention bonuses, each for $250,000, if he is still the Tech head coach on May 1, 2025 and on May 1, 2027.

The contract includes an additional schedule of bonus payments, Tech's announcement said.

It will replace the original contract McGuire signed in November 2021, also a six-year agreement that began at $3 million this year with $100,000 annual increases that were set to reach $3.5 million in 2027.

"I firmly believe our best days are still ahead with Coach McGuire at the helm of our football program," Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt said. "It was evident throughout this football season that he and his staff are building a culture that will benefit this program for years to come. Coach McGuire will be the first to tell you that his goal is not to just play in a bowl game but to win championships, and I believe we are on that path under his direction."

Tech went 7-5 in the regular season, and the Red Raiders' 5-4 record in the Big 12 ended a 12-year streak of sub-.500 records in conference play. Tech was picked ninth in the Big 12 preseason poll by media who cover the conference and finished alone in fourth place.

McGuire also has upgraded recruiting. The Red Raiders' current recruiting class is ranked among the top 25 in the nation by recruiting services, the program's best showing since 2011. The bulk of that class — 24 scholarship players and three preferred walk-ons with enrollment agreements — signed last week.

McGuire had not yet signed the contract when the agreement was announced.

"I'm fortunate to have the support of a tremendous administration here at Texas Tech with President (Lawrence) Schovanec and the best athletics director in the country in Kirby Hocutt," McGuire said in the announcement. "We firmly believe the success our team has experienced this season is the standard for what is yet to come. Our entire family can't thank Red Raider nation enough for their passionate support that is unmatched in college football."
