Texas Tech football's Patrick Mahomes making multi-million dollar donation to program

Texas Tech alumnus and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and his wife Brittany Mahomes have pledged $5 million to the Jones AT&T Stadium south end zone building and Dustin R. Womble Football Center projects.

The commitment was announced on Thursday by Texas Tech athletics, which said that the newest donation is the final gift to the Campaign for Fearless Champions to help fund the $242 million project.

Mahomes’ gift pushes Texas Tech’s fundraising efforts to $115 million for the south end zone and Womble Football Center project, surpassing the athletics department’s initial goal of $100 million.

“When we first launched this campaign, Patrick was only a freshman and now it is fitting that we approach the end of the campaign with a gift of his own,” said Kirby Hocutt, TTU director of athletics. “We couldn’t be prouder to announce this gift from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. We are so proud of Patrick for all he has accomplished and how he has continually supported Texas Tech on a global scale.”

Tech Athletics will honor Mahomes in recognition of the gift by naming the walkthrough area in the Womble Football Center in his name. The three-time Super Bowl champion will also be recognized by being the namesake for Texas Tech’s quarterback meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office in the new south end zone building.

Mahomes remains a supporter of his alma mater, according to Tech Athletics, with him having used an open weekend on the Chiefs’ schedule each of the past three seasons to support the Red Raiders.

He attended Tech road games at Houston in 2021 and Kansas in 2023 and returned to campus in 2022 for his induction into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame and Ring of Honor.

He is also credited as one of the key architects in helping form the Texas Tech Athletics deal with the sports apparel brand adidas.

The contract between Tech and adidas has not been finalized and signed, Hocutt told the Avalanche-Journal on Friday. Hocutt he's hopeful it can be completed this week with adidas representatives on-campus.

When construction on the football projects ends, Tech plans to buy the facilities from the Red Raider Raiders Facilities Foundation for the balance of the construction loan. Tech plans to pay off the debt via a combination of philanthropic gifts, financing, game-day premium revenue from the south end zone suites and club seats and additions to the annual operating budget.
