Texas Tech football loses starting lineman for the year, Tahj Brooks questionable for UNT

The Texas Tech football team has lost a key starter on the offensive line for the season due to a knee injury suffered in Saturday's loss to Washington State.

Tech has ruled starting left guard Vinny Sciury out for the year, according to the latest availability report released Monday. The Toledo transfer went down with about six minutes left in the third quarter and was carted to the locker room.

Head coach Joey McGuire said last week that he would not comment on player injuries beyond the availability report. McGuire did say Monday that Sciury has already requested the coach begin the paperwork to obtain a medical hardship waiver in an effort to return in 2025.

Starting left tackle Sterling Porcher also exited Saturday's game in Pullman, and he is listed as questionable for this weekend with a head injury.

Without its left side of the offensive line, Tech closed the Washington State game with a lineup of Dalton Merryman (left tackle), Caleb Rogers (left guard), Sheridan Wilson (center), Davion Carter (right guard) and Ty Buchanan (right tackle).

Sciury is the third Texas Tech player to be considered out for the season with a knee injury, joining outside linebackers Dylan Spencer and Joseph Adedire.

Outside linebacker Charles Esters III and safety Javeon Wilcox are still listed out for the North Texas contest.

Running back Tahj Brooks is once again listed as questionable for the UNT game. Tech's top rusher sat out the Washington State game with an arm injury.

However, McGuire said Brooks is "trending in a good way to be ready to go on Saturday." McGuire said he expects Brooks to practice Tuesday and, if he has no setbacks, to play against UNT.

Other players listed as questionable are starting cornerbacks Maurion Horn (chest) and Bralyn Lux (thigh), safeties C.J. Baskerville (shoulder) and Brenden Jordan (shoulder), linebacker John Curry (shoulder), outside linebacker Harvey Dyson III (foot) and defensive tackle Quincy Ledet Jr. (knee/head).
