Texas football strengthens its 2024 defense with transfer of Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba

Andrew Mukuba is coming home.

The Clemson safety announced Monday that he is transferring to Texas. In three seasons with the Tigers, the 6-foot, 195-pound safety started 31 of the 35 games in which he appeared and accumulated 143 tackles and 17 pass breakups. He was the top-rated safety in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports.

Local football fans won’t need to be introduced to Mukuba. He’s an Austin native who starred at LBJ High School. An All-Central Texas honoree in 2019 and 2020, he led the Jaguars to their first appearance in the state semifinals during his senior season.

Former LBJ star Andrew Mukuba has started 31 games at Clemson. The top-rated safety in the transfer portal announced Monday that he's transferring to Texas.

Mukuba’s former coach at LBJ was Jahmal Fenner, who is now UT’s director of high school relations.

At Texas, Mukuba will join a secondary that lost safety Jalen Catalon to the transfer portal this month. Veteran safety Jerrin Thompson has played four seasons but has his COVID-19 exemption year available to use in 2024.

As a team, Texas ranks 95th nationally against the pass, allowing 240.8 yards per game. The Longhorns have surrendered 19 touchdown passes.

Mukuba was the second player to announce his intention to transfer to Texas this offseason. Over the weekend, former Houston receiver Matthew Golden said he'd become a Longhorn.

Texas will add more names to its 2024 roster Wednesday when the early signing period opens for high school football players. The class of 2024 at Texas currently is No. 6 in the 247Sports composite ratings.
