Texas A&M football: 4 things to know about Marcel Reed

Redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed, starting Saturday for Texas A&M football against Florida in place of the injured Conner Weigman, looked the part early.

Reed completed 8 of his 10 pass attempts in the first quarter for the Aggies, who blitzed the Gators early to open up a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes in Gainesville.

A late recruiting flip for Texas A&M football

Reed, rated by the 247Sports Composite as a four-star prospect out of high school, was a late recruiting get for former Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher. Originally pledged to Ole Miss, Reed backed out of that commitment before joining the Aggies' class on Dec. 19, 2022. Two days later, he signed his National Letter of Intent. He stayed in College Station after Fisher was fired and replaced by Mike Elko.

Valuable bowl game experience for Marcel Reed

Saturday isn't the first time the Aggies have turned to Reed in a big game. Reed played for Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl against Oklahoma State last season following an injury to Jaylen Henderson. He played well in that game, completing 20 of his 33 passes for 361 yards. He did throw an interception, however.

Family of Marcel Reed has Texas roots

Reed's hometown is Nashville, Tennessee, where he played for Montgomery Bell Academy. But his dad, Rod, certainly has some wisdom to share about what football in Texas is like. He served as an assistant coach at Prairie View and East Texas Baptist.

Marcel Reed stats this season at Texas A&M

Reed played a bit for the Aggies against McNeese State last week. The redshirt freshman completed 5 of 11 pass attempts and rushed for 43 yards in a lopsided win.
