Texas Longhorns RB Jaydon Blue breaks out for career game against Texas Tech

Jaydon Blue has been in the Longhorns' football program for a couple of years, but the sophomore running back from Klein introduced himself to the Texas crowd with a career night.

Blue topped 100 yards against Texas Tech on a 12-yard spurt up the middle in the third quarter, which drew chants of “Bluuuue” from the more than 100,000 fans packed into Royal-Memorial Stadium. Blue had never had more than four carries or 44 yards in any single game before Friday, but he finished with 121 yards on 10 carries. That included a 69-yard scoring burst in the first half. He also added 14 yards on two catches.

"The one thing we know about him is when he gets a crease, he can go," Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said. "We saw him get a crease tonight, and he can take it the distance. He ran hard, he ran physical, and he caught the ball. He's a very versatile player."

A season-ending injury to workhorse Jonathon Brooks opened the door for freshman CJ Baxter to top 100 yards last week against Iowa State, and Blue split carries with Baxter throughout the first half.

"He's very explosive," center Jake Majors said. "You saw that on his touchdown run. Really, all those (running backs) are smart, and they know how to play football. Whoever's back there, they're going to make the right decision."

Baxter didn't play the second half after a hard bump, but he still had 45 yards on nine carries, and Savion Red added 70 yards on nine carries. Tre Wisner, who scored the final touchdown, ran for 60 yards on seven carries as Texas topped 300 yards rushing for the second time this season.
