What Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel said of job security after 14th loss in 17 games
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel commented on his job security after his team's 34-14 loss Sunday to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Titans' 14th loss in 17 games dating to last season.
"I don’t try to concern myself with that," he said. "I really am focused on these players. I hurt for them. I played 14 years. Won some games. Won some championships. I’m frustrated for the players. I’m disappointed for the players. I want them to have success. I know how hard they work and what they put into it. So that’s what my focus is."
Vrabel went on to say he's content letting the media and fans argue every week whether he should be fired. He doesn't want to wade into the conversations. Instead, he wants to focus on his players, who clearly aren't playing the brand of football that defined the first four years of his tenure in Nashville.
The Titans posted a 48-27 record in Vrabel's first 75 games in charge, including three playoff appearances and two AFC South titles. He was named the NFL's coach of the year after the 2021 season after Tennessee went 12-5 and got the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
That run continued with the team's 7-3 start to last season but came to an abrupt end with a closing seven-game losing streak as the Titans missed the playoffs. Their struggles continue: They are 3-7, have not won a road game in more than a year, have scored 20 or more points just four times in their past 17 games, and have allowed 20 or more points in 13 of those 17.
Now the Titans are four games back of first place and two games back of third place in the AFC South standings, with seven games left. Four of those are against AFC South rivals, including a Week 18 rematch against the Jaguars, so there still are opportunities for Tennessee to make things uncomfortable for everyone.
But that also means there's more time for the losing streak to continue.
"As far as Coach being the head coach, I feel like he’s done a great job," Titans running back Derrick Henry said of Vrabel. "I don’t know as far as the higher-up decisions on anything else. But I feel like we built a culture here, established that culture, but right now we’re not playing to that standard. It’s costing us. Still gotta go to work. Still got seven games left. Doing the best we can from here on out."
The Titans return to action Sunday against the Carolina Panthers (1-9), one of five teams in the league that has a worse record than Tennessee.
