The Tape Don't Lie: Joe Schad on Miami Dolphins over Jacksonville Jaguars
MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins are 1-0 after defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17 in the season opener on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.
Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, De'Von Achane, Calais Campbell, Jaelan Phillips, Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland and Jason Sanders all had key plays for the Dolphins.
Many coaches believe "The Tape Don't Lie," and that list includes coach Mike McDaniel.
"The game tape survives time," McDaniel says.
Here are some things we noticed from Sunday's film:
Dolphins, Ingold find short yardage success
With about seven minutes left in the game, fullback Alec Ingold converted a third-and-1 with a 6-yard run up the middle.
With about a minute left in the game, Ingold converted a third-and-1 with a 2-yard run up the middle.

"It’s not that exciting cause we converted because we’re the best in the league in short yardage," Mike McDaniel joked after the game.
Miami's offense was not good at all on 3rd-and-1 and 4th-and-1 last season.
But they have pledged to be more physical and on Sunday, it worked. At least twice.
Offensive line not actually that bad
Upon further review, Miami's offensive line play was not terrible.
Left tackle Terron Armstead and right tackle Austin Jackson were strong.
Center Aaron Brewer played well, especially considering he hadn't practiced much, due to a broken hand.
Liam Eichenberg was overpowered on a sack, but did do some good things in the run game.

Robert Jones did not have a great game, including a couple of penalties.
But overall, despite three sacks and a lackluster run game, Miami's offensive line has been worse than it was on Sunday.
Tua's arm strength up, up, up
A lot has been said, understandably, about the weight Tua lost - reportedly 14 pounds, per CBS - and his increased mobility.
We did see Tua on the move a bit more on Sunday.
But let's not overshadow how Tua said he worked on his throwing mechanics this offseason, too.
Each year in the NFL, Tua's arm strength has improved a little bit.
Part of it has been a physical recovery from that devastating hip injury.
And now Tua appears to have refined his mechanics, giving him a bit better torque and a more effortless appearance on long balls.

It's not just Tyreek Hill and Jaylen's Waddle's speed and talent.
It's Tua's ability - and no, he was not very, very sharp on Sunday - to throw the deep balls on time, with accuracy and anticipation that makes all the difference.
De'Von Achane is dangerous receiver
De'Von Achane may end up as Miami's top running back this season.
But Achane may also emerge as the Dolphins' clear number three receiver.
In the same way Tyreek Hill once played running back and made a stunningly effective conversion to receiver, Achane is showing he can play receiver almost as good as running back.
de'Von achane averaged 2.4 yards per carry vs. the jags. however, it was his impact in the passing game that really stood out, and re-assured what many believed about achane's usage in 2024 & beyond.

This opens up so many formation possibilities for McDaniel.
The combinations of backs and receivers is endless, really.
Jevon Holland clutch gene
We're not sure if the Dolphins will come up with the cash to keep safety Jevon Holland on a long-term contract after this season, but one thing we know is Holland is an extremely clutch player.
It feels as if all of Holland's potential has not yet been fully tapped into by Vic Fangio, Josh Boyer or Brian Flores.
Perhaps Anthony Weaver is the guy to fully tap into that potential?
On Sunday, Holland made the biggest play of the game, with a forced fumble.

Holland makes big plays. He's a great athlete. He's got great instincts. And he possesses an arrogance on the field.
Please take that in the best way possible.
Holland is a potential game-changer.
David Long & Jordyn Brooks perfect duo
There are a lot of similarities between David Long and Jordyn Brooks.
They are both fast. They are both physical. They can both play all three downs.
There is not a need to sub these guys out, which is a big plus for Weaver.
They can trigger against the run. They have a chance covering running backs and linebackers.
If these guys stay healthy, it's an upgrade over former combinations of linebackers such as Jerome Baker and Elandon Roberts.
Baker was vulnerable against the run. And Roberts, for example, was vulnerable against the pass.
But these guys play with a chip. They're an intimidating duo.
Jaelan Phillips & Emmanuel Ogbah sacks
Emmanuel Ogbah did not expect to return to Miami after a disappointing last season under Fangio.
Last week, Ogbah was saying he feels free to rush the passer again under Weaver.
Ogbah looked completely rejuvenated on Sunday.
With Bradley Chubb sidelined for at least Miami's first four games, Ogbah played a lot more and was a lot more effective than anyone may have expected.
On Sunday, Ogbah had 2 pressures, 1 sack, 1 quarterback hit and 2 run stops.
And nobody could have anticipated that Phillips would play as much as he did, so soon after returning from a torn Achilles.

Phillips had 3 pressures, 1 sack, 2 quarterback hurries and 2 run stops.
As rookie Chop Robinson appears to need time to grow, the apparent health of Phillips and the apparent resurgence of Ogbah are huge plusses in the early part of this season.
