It seems mathematically and logistically impossible, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had 501 yards of total offense on Sunday against the Washington Redskins and yet managed only a meager three points. Three! How does that even happen?

Washington won 16-3 thanks in large part to Tampa Bay’s futility in every phase of the game that wasn’t just pure yardage-gobbling. The Bucs missed two of three field goals, lost two of four fumbles, threw two interceptions, and surrendered eight sacks.

Afterward, Tampa Bay head coach Dirk Koetter conceded that he’d taken over play-calling from offensive coordinator Todd Monken for the first time all season.

“I called the plays today,” Koetter said, “the whole day.” As for the motivation for the change, all Koetter offered was, “my own reasons.”

Washington had no sympathy whatsoever for Koetter and Tampa Bay, repurposing an old clip of Koetter throwing out Halloween candy:

Cold, ice freaking cold.

If there’s any salvation at all to be had in Tampa, it’s this: the Bucs’ next two games come against the Giants and the 49ers, who combined have a record of 3-14. If nothing else, that’ll give Koetter a chance to practice his play-calling in a lower-stress environment.
