The race to land No. 1 overall recruit AJ Dybantsa is officially on. The North Carolina Tar Heels were one of seven teams to make his finalists list last week.

Right now, it's tough to tell where the Tar Heels stand in his recruitment but they should be getting an official visit. However, there appears to be a surprise team possibly leading this race.

Rob Cassidy of Rivals.com wrote on Dybantsa and the teams involved in his recruitment. Despite big programs Kansas, UNC and Alabama being involved, BYU may have the advantage for the in-state prospect early on at least.

The buzz surrounding BYU has been growing for months and has only gotten louder in the wake of Dybantsa’s recent transfer to Utah Prep. The hiring of a new head coach Kevin Young has energized the fan base and donors in Provo, which seems to have resulted in a big push for top-ranked Dybantsa, who plans to decide in February. Rumors of a massive fund-raising effort in an attempt to lure the future pro to Provo are difficult to confirm but seem based in reality if you listen to whispers coming from people in the know.

Obviously, it won’t be easy for Young to hold off more storied programs and more accomplished coaching staffs, but the Cougars should not be taken lightly as they are clearly one of the more serious players in the Dybantsa sweepstakes and may well have the necessary capital to actually land his commitment.

BYU is the in-state school for Dybantsa, it makes sense that they were on his list and have a solid chance at landing him. But how long will they stick in this recruitment?

With big programs still involved, will BYU be able to hold them off and land a premier recruit? Cassidy seems to think they at least have a chance.
