Super Bowl 2024: Chiefs beat 49ers in OT thriller on walk-off TD pass by Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions for a third time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Mahomes found Mecole Hardman for a walk-off touchdown in overtime on Sunday to deliver a 25-22 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in a thriller. The Super Bowl victory is the second straight for the Chiefs and their third in five seasons. It also marks their second win over the 49ers in the Super Bowl after beating San Francisco following the 2019 season.

Mahomes was stellar yet again, completing 34 of 46 passes for 333 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He led the Chiefs on a game-tying drive at the end of regulation, then the game-winning drive in overtime. He converted two first downs with his feet in the extra session, including a run on fourth-and-1 to keep the Chiefs alive.

The effort earned Mahomes his third Super Bowl MVP trophy.

  • Jake Moody pays off the drive, though. The 49ers kicker is good from 53 yards to give San Francisco a 19-16 lead with 1:53 remaining.

  • Huge defensive play from the Chiefs with the game on the line. Chiefs blitz on third-and-4 and force a Brock Purdy incompletion after the two-minute warning. Aggressive defense pays off.

  • The 49ers are down in Chiefs territory now with about 3 minutes left in the game.

  • The 49ers get a huge stop on 3rd and goal, and the Chiefs will settle for a field goal. It's now 16-16 with just less than 6 minutes left in the game.

    That 49ers missed PAT looms large.

  • Travis Kelce with a pair of catches on this drive, and the Chiefs are rolling. They're at the 20 now.

  • Well, that paid off. Jauan Jennings just scored a touchdown, and the 49ers are back on top 16-13 after a missed extra point. What a play call there.

  • Kyle Shanahan just went for it on 4th and 3, and George Kittle just barely converted to keep the drive alive. What a play call in the fourth quarter when a field goal would have tied things up.

  • We're through three quarters with Kansas City holding a 13-10 lead. Taylor Swift approves of the go-ahead Chiefs touchdown.

  • Patrick Mahomes converts the turnover into a Chiefs touchdown with a pass in the end zone to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Kansas City's first touchdown of the game gives it a 13-10 lead late in the third quarter. Game-changing swing.

  • Disaster for the 49ers. They force a punt, then muff the return after the ball hits Darrell Luter Jr's leg. Ray-Ray McCloud can't pick up the ball, and the Chiefs recover deep in 49ers territory.

     

  • There's another three-and-out for San Francisco and another punt. This game remains a slog. Kansas City has the ball back and can take the lead here despite having not yet scored a touchdown. 49ers lead, 10-6.
