THE REWIND
Consolidating draft assets
Draft assets and a willing trade partner with limited assets and a lack of future first-round picks proved to be the perfect mix for the Suns in the draft.

After the Suns took 18-year-old Dragan Bender with their own pick at No. 4 overall, Phoenix turned its attention to 19-year-old Marquese Chriss.

Chriss, projected as a top-five pick and a player whom the Suns debated taking at No. 4, began to slide down the draft board.

Fortunately for Phoenix, prior trades with Washington (No. 12 pick), Cleveland (No. 28) and Indiana (Bogdan Bogdanovic) proved beneficial.

Phoenix was able to consolidate all three assets, find a willing trade partner in Sacramento and select Chriss with the seventh overall pick.

With a young core of Bender (18), Chriss (19), Devin Booker (19), Alex Len (23), T.J. Warren (22), Archie Goodwin (21), Brandon Knight (24) and second-round pick Tyler Ulis (20), Phoenix now has eight players 24 or younger.

Veteran leadership
With a strong foundation of young players, Phoenix turned its attention to two former Suns in free agency.

Jared Dudley and Leandro Barbosa, each coming off strong seasons with Washington and Golden State, respectively, will provide Phoenix with something lacking last season: leadership on and off court.

Both players, along with veteran Tyson Chandler, will help provide a nice mix of youth and experience to a Suns team looking to rebound from a disappointing 23-win season last year.

Phoenix entered free agency with $29 million in room and wanted to provide a support system for their young players.

Barbosa and Dudley were both signed using cap space.

Cap space was also used on Ulis, who signed a four-year contract that mirrors a first-round rookie scale contract.

Bender and Chriss are under rookie-scale contracts.

Phoenix still has $13.2 million in cap space and the $2.89 million room mid-level (once cap space is used) if needed.

RESTRICTIONS
Free agents signed in the offseason cannot be traded until either Dec. 15, Jan. 15 or for three months if they signed after Sept. 15.

Dudley and Barbosa cannot be traded until Dec. 15.

EXTENSION CANDIDATES
Rookie
Len and Goodwin, former 2013 first-round picks entering the final season of their deals, are eligible to have their contracts extended until Oct. 31.

Len, with a $12 million cap hold, is a candidate for an extension based on his high cap hold and the Suns’ cap situation. The Suns would lose little flexibility if they extended Len in the $14 million-16 million range.

Goodwin, still only 21, has a cap hold of $5.2 million and showed some flashes last season, including a strong February when he averaged 15 points per game.

Phoenix has 13 guaranteed contracts and two players with partial guaranteed contracts in Jenkins and Williams.

Williams’ contract will become guaranteed if he is not waived by Sept. 1, and Jenkins will be guaranteed if not waived by Oct. 23.

SNEAK PEEK TO NEXT SUMMER
The Suns are right at the cap with the $29 million in free-agent cap holds of Len, Goodwin and P.J. Tucker.

If the Suns let go of the Tucker hold and wait until next summer to address restricted free agents Len and Goodwin, Phoenix could have $15 million in room.

KEEP AN EYE ON
Eric Bledsoe
Coming off a season in which he missed 51 games because of injury, Bledsoe is healthy again but with a new coach and a crowded backcourt.

Unlike running mate Brandon Knight, Bledsoe has not played under interim coach Earl Watson.

The emergence of Booker, who averaged 13.8 points as a rookie, means the Suns have plenty of backcourt depth, and no one is guaranteed a starting role when training camp starts.
