Studs and duds from Saints' Week 9 loss vs. Panthers
The New Orleans Saints extend their losing streak to seven games in a row. To make matters even worse, the loss came against the Carolina Panthers. There were many players who performed consistently well for 60 minutes. That list may include Alvin Kamara by himself. Other players, had shining moments.
It's a lot of bad when you lose to the team with the worst record in the league. Defensively, they allowed Bryce Young looked more comfortable than ever. The Panthers had the longest play of their season against the Saints. The Saints were without cornerbacks, but this felt like the game you should have won.
Stud: Alvin Kamara
If Alvin Kamara could play against the Carolina Panthers every week, he would. He's had a field day against the divisional opponent in both games. Kamara was easily the best part of the Saints offensive game plan. It’s been that way all year long, but it was even more necessary with Chris Olave leaving in the first quarter with a concussion.
Stud: Shemar Jean-Charles
Jean-Charles’ interception was the defensive play of the day. He showed good ball skills to rake at the ball and good grip to completely snag the ball away from Xavier Legette. The cornerback was thrusted into a tough situation. Injuries to three cornerbacks pushed him into the starting lineup.
Stud: Taysom Hill
Taysom Hill did what Taysom Hill does in Week 9. He was the Saints sledgehammer on short yardage plays and scored a touchdown of his own. For the rest of the season, Hill's main purpose is likely to be the secondary running threat behind Kamara.
Dud: Derek Carr
Derek Carr did not seem ready to come back from his oblique injury just yet, as he struggled immensely to push the ball down the field for most of the game and was inefficient at best. His passes lacked anticipation, and that is why he ultimately went 18 for 31 (58% completion rate), for 236 passing yards and 1 touchdown. He was not significantly better than Jake Haener or Spencer Rattler, and while he did have a few positive plays, looking that poor against a previously 1-7 Carolina Panthers team is tough.
Dud: Dennis Allen
The New Orleans Saints' failures heavily fall on the shoulders of Dennis Allen, from poor timeout utilization to poor playcalling, the Saints were ineffective all day and much of that was not execution. He has been poor at best as a head coach, and this may end up being the final straw for the front office when it comes to his tenure in New Orleans.
Dud: Pass rush
The pass rush, against an offensive line missing Ikem Ekwonu at tackle, was essentially nonexistent when it came to producing pressure. The Saints had only one sack on the day which was split between Nathan Shepherd and Carl Granderson, and they only had 4 QB hits throughout the entire matchup. While Chase Young did get a sack on the late two-point conversion, the group as a whole was poor overall.
