The New Orleans Saints' second preseason matchup is over with, as they ended up losing 16-10 to the San Francisco 49ers on the back of a 13-point second quarter. Despite the loss, there were definitely some bright spots for the team, including some returning faces from last week. In this article we will focus on players who broke out or failed expectations, rather than listing off the same players as last week (such as another quality performance from Rico Payton).

With that out of the way, here are our studs and duds from the second week of preseason for the Saints:

Stud: Anfernee Orji

Orji played essentially the entire game and made plays in both facets of the game. One of his standout plays was his coverage on an out route. Orji was step for step with the receiver. He also showed the ability to play downhill and consistently making plays around the football. Behind the top three, Orji is looking to establish himself as next in line. He was the best of the bunch on Sunday.

Dud: Backup quarterbacks

After a great week for the backup quarterbacks against the Arizona Cardinals, they both were out of form for the second matchup. Jake Haener went 7-of-13 for 76 passing yards, which is solid but he also threw a few poor passes that were less than stellar. Spencer Rattler also looked to hit a wall this game, going 4-of-8 for 28 yards, taking 2 sacks for 13 yards, and fumbling early in the game which was costly as it led to a 49ers field goal. Not a great game for the backups.

Stud: Alontae Taylor

Alontae Taylor has been praised by Dennis Allen and he was amazing this week. He consistently had tight coverage. He's using his physicality to his advantage. For Taylor, that looks like strongly jamming receiving threats or making plays against the run. The 49ers tried to run the ball wide towards Taylor's side. The cornerback set the edge and made the tackle like he's been working with the defensive ends.

Dud: Shane Lemieux

The tough day for Lemieux was not solely on him, he was being utilized at center which is most definitely not his best position. Regardless, he was responsible for a fumble due to a very flat snap, as well as multiple other snaps that were nowhere near where they needed to be. He struggled last week as well, which makes his roster spot not guaranteed entering the last week of preseason.

Stud: Jordan Mims

Jordan Mims is fighting to take full control of his role above Kendre Miller, and performances like this will get it done. He had a few good runs throughout the day, displaying good vision and decisive running. One additive was his kick return ability. Mims had a few good returns that also improve his stock.

Dud: Lou Hedley

Lou Hedley had a tough day considering his pretty impressive first performance in preseason.  He ended up with three punts, going for 116 yards (38.7 average), a touchback, and no punts inside the opposing 20. He also only had a long punt of 43 yards. With Matthew Hayball averaging 48 yards per attempt on 2 punts, things look murky for Hedley.
