Studs and Duds from Saints' preseason loss to the Titans
The New Orleans Saints' preseason finale has concluded with the team dropping it's last one 30-27 to the Tennessee Titans. Amidst the loss, the team found out a lot about what they have in terms of the depth of their roster, and have some tough decisions to make before cutdowns in just a couple days. In this piece we highlight players who solidified their status going forward as well as those who might've made their path to making the team a bit more murky.
With that, here are our studs and duds from the final week of the preseason for the Saints:
Stud: Spencer Rattler
Rattler put on a bit of a show in his final preseason outing, potentially separating himself from Jake Haener in the back up quarterback battle. Of his four drives on the day, three of them ended in touchdowns with the other being a field goal. Rattler impressed mightily making some beautiful throws and extending drives with his legs. Based on what we've seen so far, Rattler looks like he could be a potential future starter for this team down the line.
Stud: Equanimeous St. Brown
With St. Brown missing the first two preseason games with injury, making his presence known in the finale was a must in terms of making this roster. Sunday he was able to do just that. St. Brown caught three of his four targets on the day including a 21-yard touchdown from Rattler with defenders draped all over him. With the lack of production coming from the receiver group outside of their top two guys (Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed), St. Brown made his case for making this roster or potentially as a standard practice squad elevation week-to-week.
Dud: Isaiah Foskey
Aside from his lone TFL on a botched play, Foskey has been a bit of a disappointment to this point. Most of his engagements with offensive linemen often end up in stalemates due to the lack of hand usage. As a high second round selection, there should undoubtedly be more production against the second and third team groups but we have yet to see this thus far.
Dud: Michael Jacobson
Jacobson had a lot to prove to make his case as the teams No.3 tight end and those hopes quickly diminished Sunday. Jacobson failed to haul in his two targets while also committing three holding penalties with one nullifying a touchdown by running back James Robinson early in the game. An overall poor performance by the young player.
Stud: Running backs
It was hard to select just one guy at the running back position for the Saints. As a group, they were able to pound out 106 yards on the ground on 20 attempts, averaging just over five yards per carry. This along with Jacob Kibodi's two scores gave the group it's second consecutive week of eclipsing the 100-yard mark. A great sign for this team going forward.
