Struggling Former Oiler Put On Waivers

EDMONTON -- What goes up, must come down.

The Edmonton Oilers know this very well. This crew has seen everything from the heights of making the Stanley Cup Final to the low of a 2-4-1 start.

Part of those peaks and valleys involves sending promising players down to work on their game and calling up others to fill in for injured teammates.

This is precisely what is happening with former Oilers winger Kailer Yamamoto.

The 26-year-old first-round pick has had a rough go lately. He's bounced around from the Oilers to the Detroit Red Wings, Seattle Kraken, and now the Utah Hockey Club.

Now, he's poised to play some games for Utah's AHL affiliate, the Tuscon Roadrunners.

Yamamoto has played three games for Utah this year. He's a -1 with only one shot on goal, averaging 10:40 of ice time per game. His career average over 306 NHL games is 15:31.

The struggling winger last played in the AHL during the 2019-20 season. In 23 games for the Bakersfield Condors, he recorded 16 points.

With Nick Bjugstad returning from injury, Yamamoto was the odd player out. Given his impact on the scoresheet, it's easy to see why he drew the short end of the hockey stick.

He has fallen far from the promise he showed with the Oilers. In the 2019-20 season, he recorded 26 points in 27 games. Two seasons later, he collected 41 points, including 20 goals, while averaging nearly 17 minutes a night.

To reach those heights again, Yamamoto has a big hole to dig himself out of. How far will he fall before he turns it around? The jury is still out on that one.
