'Still one of my goals.' Olympic future on Aliyah Boston's mind after missing 2024 team

INDIANAPOLIS -- Caitlin Clark wasn't the only Indiana Fever player left off USA Basketball's roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Second-year All-Star Aliyah Boston won't be an Olympian this summer, but said she understands how difficult it is to make the 12-player roster.

The Olympic team is made up of multiple-time MVPs, WNBA champions and all-stars picked from a pool of about 30 players which included Boston and Clark.

The Las Vegas Aces lead the league with four of their players on the 5x5 Olympic team, while Phoenix has three and New York has two. Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, 26, is the youngest player on the roster.

“I’m excited for the women that did (make the team), it’s definitely a hard thing to do," Boston said. "I think the Olympic committee did a great job, the women that they picked are exceptional players. It’s obviously still one of my goals, so hopefully one day I’m able to accomplish that.”

Unlike Clark, the 22-year-old Boston participated in multiple camps leading up to the selection. USA Basketball held a November training camp and two exhibition games, as well as an April camp during the week of the Final Four. Boston also played in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Belgium, getting time in two games and starting one.

USA Basketball doesn't list official alternates for the Olympic team — any player that has been in the Olympic pool is eligible to serve as an alternate. If a player were to get injured in the leadup to the Olympics, who would replace them is based on a variety of factors, including position. Players can be added or taken off teams up to the point they leave for Paris. After that, the roster is set.
