Steve Smith Sr. told Panthers to draft 2nd-round pick Jonathan Mingo

The last regime took draft advice from the former head coach’s wife. This one takes it from a franchise legend.

In case you may have missed it on Friday night, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper told second-round pick Jonathan Mingo a little story when he was selected. Take a look and listen . . .

Steve Smith Sr. had stayed a bit distant from the franchise following what was a messy, bloody and gut-wrenching divorce back in 2014. But, 89 has iced up those wounds in recent years—particularly around the time Tepper took over the team.

And, hey, in addition to being a preseason color commentator for the organization, he may be a draft consultant as well. Here’s what Carolina’s leading all-time pass catcher had to say about their newest one:

“My comp for Jonathan Mingo is Eric Moulds,” Smith Sr. said on NFL Network this past weekend. “Mingo’s superpower is his strength. It’s not his strength to where he’s trying to play outside of himself. He knows exactly who he is. And he plays big boy ball.”

So, since he likes the pick so much, maybe Smitty can add a part-time wide receivers coach title to his already hefty résumé.
