Stephen Curry drops 50 points in Warriors' blowout win over Hawks

It was only a matter of time before Stephen Curry went off again.

The Golden State Warriors star dropped 50 points on Monday night to lead them to their 127-113 win over the Atlanta Hawks at the Chase Center. He had nine three-pointers while shooting 50% from the field.

“He’s amazing,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, via SB Nation’s Joe Viray. “I wanna say I’ve never seen anything like it but I’ve watched him for seven years … It’s still incredible to watch.”

Curry and the Warriors pretty much had the game wrapped up before the fourth quarter started. They held Atlanta to 20 points in the third quarter, while pushing their lead to double digits.

Curry got to 50 with a pair of 3-pointers and then a floater midway through the fourth. He's the first player in the league to score 50 in a game this season. It marks his 10th career 50-point game, which ties him with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the 10th-most in league history.

“I think the guys really wanted him to get that last bucket, and I know the fans did,” Kerr said, via the San Francisco Chronicle’s Rusty Simmons. “It was just a stunning performance by Steph.”

Curry ended his night with 10 assists and seven rebounds to go with his 50-piece, and shot 14-of-28 from the field and 9-of-19 from behind the arc.

Jordan Poole was the next closest Warriors player with 16 points, and Andrew Wiggins added 13. Trae Young led Atlanta with 28 points and nine assists in the loss, and John Collins finished with 19. The Hawks have lost four straight.

Though it’s just the Warriors' 10th game of the season, Curry’s night came at a great time for the two-time league MVP. He started the season slowly, at least by his standards. Both his 3-point percentage and his points-per-game average were significantly down from last season headed into Monday’s game, and he’d been held to 20 points or fewer in his past four games.

Yet after Monday night and the Warriors’ 9-1 start to the season, it’s clear their last two down seasons are behind them. Curry and Golden State have made one huge statement to kick off the 2021-22 season.
