Stefon Diggs returns to Bills practice, McDermott says issues are resolved
Stefon Diggs was on the indoor practice field Wednesday, and while the Buffalo Bills star wide receiver did not speak to reporters, coach Sean McDermott indicated that all is well after a Tuesday that was filled with drama.
And contrary to the belief of a section of fans who insist that the media is the problem in situations like these, as if we make up things for sport and clicks, McDermott - without actually apologizing - essentially recognized his role in fanning the flames that led to a needless brush fire.
Maiorana: It's time for Stefon Diggs to prove he's 'an all-in dude' for Buffalo Bills
“I wanted to follow up on my comments regarding Stef’s situation yesterday and in doing so hope to provide better clarity for all, and a better understanding of the situation because there’s a lot of things out there that aren’t accurate,” said McDermott, who was not originally scheduled to speak to reporters.
Those inaccuracies were born out of McDermott’s puzzling comment Tuesday. After saying Diggs was the only player who would not be practicing in what is supposed to be a mandatory mini camp, he went on to add that he was “very concerned” about Diggs’ absence.
As we learned later in the day, Diggs was at the stadium Monday for his physical, and he was there Tuesday and spoke with McDermott, Josh Allen, and Brandon Beane and possibly others, then left before practice began. So the “very concerned” comment seemed unusual given that McDermott had just spoken with Diggs, at the facility.
“Yeah, well, this is not your first press conference with me,” McDermott said. “Whenever a player has something going on or misses and he’s not here for some reason, I am concerned. That’s my sentiment with any player and in particular a player as important to us as Stef. And so I get concerned when players miss for reasons off the field, for reasons on the field, whether it be they’re injured, or whatever it is, that’s just how I am.”
That sufficed for an explanation, but again, had he just explained the full situation Tuesday (which seems to be difficult for most coaches, not just McDermott), Diggs’ absence on the field Tuesday wouldn’t have been a very big story, and Josh Allen wouldn’t have had to do an 11-minute tap dance while he was being peppered with questions.

Wednesday, Diggs participated in the individual drills, caught a few passes from Allen, but he sat out the 11-on-11 team drills, mainly because he hasn’t done any of that stuff after skipping the entire voluntary portion of the offseason program.
Diggs looked like he usually does in practice. He was upbeat, clowning around at times, he was engaging with teammates, even helping out a couple of the rookie receivers at one point. And once team drills began, he stood with other teammates on the sideline paying close attention.
“Stefon is such an explosive personality as well as a football player,” center Mitch Morse said. “We all have our personal relationships with every player in here. And I feel like we have a very good one between us, too. And it’s just good to see a friend out here as well as an exceptional football player.”
Morse admitted to not having full knowledge of what has been going on with Diggs “which makes me blissfully naive to some point” but he added that it looks to him as if everyone is working to come together.
“I think they’re doing the thing that they’re supposed to do, which is to have possibly uncomfortable conversations, have some candidness, which can be hard at times,” Morse said. “I don’t totally know what’s going on, so I can’t answer it, but I’m sure it’ll work itself out one way or another.”
McDermott confirmed that the talks that were held Monday and Tuesday have, at least in his mind, resolved the situation.
“Let me be clear; Stef did everything that he was asked to do,” McDermott said. “He was here Monday and executed his physical on time, Stef reported Tuesday, and reported for meetings, at which time we had a good conversation. We got to a point yesterday where we just felt like we all needed a break and some space and so I gave Stef permission to get some space and head out and then picked up those conversations after practice.”
We still don’t know the root of Diggs’ consternation because McDermott, nor Allen, divulged anything specific, but it does seem like the primary issue centers on the way the offense played down the stretch, and Diggs’ reduced role.

“I’m not going to get into what we did or didn’t do,” McDermott said of last season. “I feel overall that we take a hard look at the season and review and we come out of those meetings with some real truths about what we could have done better. Whether it’s getting Stef the ball in this case, and listen, getting Stef the ball is an important part of our offense.
“There’s no reason to say it isn’t. I mean, he’s a big focal point of our offense in addition to Josh and so you know, it’s important to get him going and the more production he has the more production we have as an offense. Those usually work hand in hand.”
Late Wednesday, McDermott - as he has been known to do - canceled the final day of mini camp so the next time we see Diggs will be at St. John Fisher College in late July, presumably with all this behind him and ready to go.
“I feel like we’re in a real good spot,” McDermott said. “Stef’s a valuable member of this football team. He’s one of our captains and a leader on this football team. He works extremely, extremely hard, as hard as any player I’ve been around to be elite in this league and that’s what he is. And I love him.”
