Russell Wilson has ‘pole position’ for Steelers QB job, according to HC Mike Tomlin

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is masterful at not saying what you expect but making it sound like he has. When asked on Sunday about the starting quarterback job in Pittsburgh during the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Florida, he did his best to be noncommittal while still sounding like he knows how things will go.

According to Tomlin, veteran addition Russell Wilson has the “pole position” for the starting quarterback job and Justin Fields will be in the mix to compete when it’s appropriate, as Tomlin put it.

Does this mean Fields has no shot to win the starting job? Technically I suppose it doesn’t. But Tomlin also talked about how Fields is excited to work with Wilson and at least based on what Tomlin said, he is in no rush to start. This is good because if we’ve seen anything from Tomlin, offseason quarterback competitions aren’t really competitions at all.
