Steelers OC Arthur Smith takes exception to analysis of QB Justin Fields
We didn't get to see much of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields in the team's first preseason game. Fields only played 17 snaps against the Houston Texans and only attempted six passes. He did complete five of them, however, for 67 yards.
Fields' performance was solid and as expected in a new scheme. It would have been nice to see him lead the team to the end zone but there was certainly good and bad.
Steelers offensive coordinator talked to the media on Monday and it sounded like he didn't appreciate how critical some were of Fields' performance on Friday night.
“Regardless of whoever gets online and tries to break things down and doesn’t know what’s what; it’s shared accountability. Protections, route depths, winning vs man, there’s a lot of things in one play we need to continue to improve. I thought once we got of our own way, I thought he operated pretty well.”
We love the concept of shared accountability. Nothing we saw from Fields' performance screamed of anything he did that was any worse than what anyone else did on offense. If anything, the scheme we saw did the entire offense no favors and is probably a bigger issue to keep an eye on.
