Steelers insider reveals team's future plan for QB Justin Fields
Starting Justin Fields was never in the cards for Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. It was always Russell Wilson -- until it wasn't.
Wilson succumbed to a calf injury during conditioning drills on the first day of training camp and hasn't been the same since, forcing the decision to go with Fields Week 1 and all but officially Week 2.
But according to Gerry Dulac, Steelers insider for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Fields is also already set to start in Pittsburgh's home opener versus the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 22.
Here's what Dulac wrote in his latest column for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
According to sources, the Steelers plan to have Justin Fields start the next two games — Sunday in Denver against the Broncos and the home opener Sept. 22 against the Los Angeles Chargers — while Russell Wilson continues to rest his injured calf so it doesn’t morph into something worse.
Dulac stated that Tomlin and the staff are being extra cautious so that it doesn’t become an Achilles problem, commonly occurring where the calf muscle joins the tendon.
