Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger agree to contract extension
On the 15th anniversary of the day the Pittsburgh Steelers chose him 11th overall in the 2004 draft, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers have reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension.
Roethlisberger’s current contract was set to expire after the 2019 league year, and he’s now signed through 2021.
Financial details are not yet available.
“I am pleased to announce Ben Roethlisberger has been signed to a new three-year contract,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said on the team’s website. “Ben is one of the most productive quarterbacks in NFL history, and he continued to climb the lists among the all-time passing leaders in the League last season.
“But I know Ben’s focus is on only one goal – to bring another Lombardi trophy back to Pittsburgh. We are excited to finalize this new contract that will keep him as a Steeler through the 2021 season.”
Roethlisberger last signed an extension with Pittsburgh in 2015. Roethlisberger and particularly his agent are generally tight-lipped about his contract details, though that deal averaged $21.85 million per year for the six-time Pro Bowler.
The Steelers wanted to get a deal in place with Roethlisberger before this year’s draft, and that has happened.
Now 37-years-old, Roethlisberger led the NFL in attempts (675), completions (452) and passing yards (5,129) last season. He also had a league-high 16 interceptions against 34 touchdowns.
