Position battles aren't won in a singular practice. The battle between Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler will continue through the duration of the New Orleans Saints preseason regardless of what happens on Monday's practice. That being said Spencer Rattler has to make good on the opportunity in front of him.

Haener will miss Monday's practice because he's undergoing an operation regarding his newly developed skin cancer. Thankfully, the procedure should lead to him only missing a day of practice.

Rattler will now take on all of the reps with the second and third team. Basically, if Derek Carr isn't on the field, Rattler is. The rookie has to deliver in this situation. This will be the most reps he has seen in a single practice all offseason long. If Haener is able to return for Wednesday's practice, Rattler won't get an opportunity like this again.

The backup quarterback position battle has been heavily anticipated, and it's been close through the beginning of camp. A strong practice on Monday may or may not cause separation. The latter feels the most likely.

More opportunities mean more chances to excel or fail. Even if immediate separation isn't the result, Rattler performing well on Monday should go a long way for him.
