South Carolina women's basketball routs Bowling Green in Bree Hall's triumphant homecoming

South Carolina women's basketball routed Bowling Green 93-62 on Tuesday, delivering former assistant Fred Chmiel his first home loss in his first season as the Falcons' head coach.

The No. 1 Gamecocks (11-0) led wire-to-wire at Bowling Green (6-3) behind one of their best shooting nights of the season. South Carolina hit 58.7% from the field and 56.3% from 3-point range after starting the game 10-of-10. Ten of 11 players who saw the court recorded points with four in double-digits.

"It was great to see Fred," coach Dawn Staley said. "He's just a great guy. Smart coach, disciplined, high energy. He's going to do really well here. I think this a community that's going to really embrace him, and he's going to embrace the community. ... I wanted him to have his own program and make an impact on young people like he made an impact on me."

Chloe Kitts had arguably her best performance as a Gamecock after scoring a career-high 14 points against Duke just two weeks ago. The sophomore surpassed that mark easily with 21 points against the Falcons, shooting 10-of-12 from the field.

Kitts added six rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist. Her well-rounded performance was also largely mistake-free: She did not give up a single turnover and was assessed only one foul.

Bree Hall dominates in Ohio homecoming

Bree Hall drained her first three 3-point attempts to reach nine points in the first quarter. She matched her career high of 18 points late in the third quarter and ended tying her career high in made 3-pointers with four. The junior finished shooting 7-of-9 and tied senior guard Te-Hina Paopao for a team-best 4-of-6 beyond the arc. She also logged two rebounds, two assists and a steal in just 22 minutes.

For Hall, the performance was a triumphant homecoming of sorts. The Dayton, Ohio, native had never played a college game in her home state before Tuesday's win. Former South Carolina star Zia Cooke, who is from Toledo, Ohio, was in attendance to cheer on the Gamecocks.

High-volume passing fuels South Carolina

South Carolina is used to dominance on the boards, but the Gamecocks had nearly as many assists (13) as they did rebounds (14) at halftime. Paopao led the team with six assists but point guard Raven Johnson wasn't far behind with four. The team finished with 21 assists and 36 rebounds, marking the lowest rebounding total of the season.

The Gamecocks weaponized their size advantage more for ball movement, regularly positioning Kamilla Cardoso at the high post to feed Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins down low. Cardoso's five assists were the most of her South Carolina career and just one shy of her career-best six set at Syracuse in 2021. Watkins logged a team-high eight rebounds followed by Kitts' six.

"We were prepared for them to play zone at some point, but we didn't think they were going to play zone the majority of the game," Staley said. "I thought our bigs did a good job connecting with each other when the zone got spread out."
