South Carolina women's basketball rallies for 76-70 win vs LSU after Angel Reese fouls out
No. 1 South Carolina women's basketball walked out of Pete Maravich Assembly Center with its undefeated record intact, beating No. 9 LSU, 76-70, Thursday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
South Carolina (18-0, 6-0 SEC) took advantage after star junior forward Angel Reese fouled out in the fourth period, outscoring LSU 11-3 down the stretch.
Bree Hall and Te-Hina Paopao took over for the Gamecocks in the fourth quarter to help South Carolina beat the Tigers (18-3, 5-2).
South Carolina went over 32 minutes of gametime between leads. The Gamecocks scored the first bucket of the game and didn't lead again until a 63-61 advantage with six minutes left to play.
Thursday was only the second time this season South Carolina trailed at halftime. The Gamecocks came back on the road to beat UNC, 65-58, in the other game on Nov. 30.
South Carolina looked unsettled early, making mistakes that were uncharacteristic of its perfect start. In the first quarter, the Gamecocks turned the ball over four times and allowed six LSU offensive rebounds, contributing to an early 11-point deficit.
The LSU lead never climbed above 11 points in the second quarter, but South Carolina didn't cut the deficit down until a 6-0 run at the end of the half made the score 41-36 at halftime.
South Carolina takes advantage after Angel Reese fouls out
After Reese fouled out with four minutes remaining, sophomore guard Raven Johnson tied the game with two free throws.
Reese finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, but her time on the bench proved a major factor in the end.
Te-Hina Paopao, Bree Hall lift South Carolina in fourth quarter
When South Carolina needed scoring in the fourth quarter, Hall and Paopao turned up to provide it.
Hall had eight points, including the go-ahead 3-point basket, and finished with 10 points. Paopao scored seven points in the fourth, including two free throws to tie the game at 61-61 after the Gamecocks trailed for over 32 minutes of game time.
Paopao has hit two 3-pointers in every game but one this season and leads the nation in 3-point percentage, making 56% of her shots beyond the arc.
Fulwiley's energy reinvigorates Gamecocks
Freshman guard MiLaysia Fulwiley scored eight points in the second quarter alone, including a buzzer beating 3-pointer at halftime. Fulwiley's second quarter, which also included a steal and a fast-break layup in only four minutes, brought South Carolina new energy late in the first half.
It was also a high contrast with her first quarter — Fulwiley played one minute and airballed her first shot, then traveled on South Carolina's next possession.
Fulwiley has been impressive for the Gamecocks in her first season, averaging 11.7 points per game. In South Carolina's last game, Fulwiley scored a career-high 21 points against Texas A&M, but coach Dawn Staley has kept close watch on the freshman's minutes. Despite her strong second quarter, she played just 10 minutes against LSU.
