South Carolina football hires ex-NFL coordinator Joe DeCamillis as special teams coach

South Carolina football has filled its coaching staff with the hiring of Joe DeCamillis as special teams coordinator, the team announced Monday.

DeCamillis' contract, which will pay him $800,000 per season for three years, was approved by the South Carolina board of trustees.

He most recently was with the Texas Longhorns as a special assistant to the head coach, but spent the previous 14 seasons as a special teams coordinator with five NFL teams. He brings 32 total years of experience as an NFL coach to the Gamecocks, having served in the league since 1991.

DeCamillis is a two-time Super Bowl champion, winning Super Bowl 50 while serving as the Denver Broncos' special teams coordinator and Super Bowl 56 as a special teams coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams. He also served in the same role with the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars.

DeCamillis will fill the opening left by Pete Lembo, who was hired to become the head coach at the University of Buffalo on Jan 21.

Lembo had spent three seasons as the Gamecocks' special teams coordinator after being hired in December 2020. His unit was among the nation's best in 2022, ranking fourth in kick returns, fifth in punt returns and seventh in net punt yardage.

With DeCamillis' hiring, Shane Beamer has filled his coaching staff for the 2024 season. DeCamillis is the third new coach on the staff, following the hires of Marquel Blackwell as running backs coach and James Coley as wide receivers coach. Justin Stepp will return for his fourth season but moves from wide receivers coach to tight ends coach.
