South Carolina baseball season ends on 4-0 loss to Florida in NCAA Tournament super regional
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — South Carolina baseball's season ended in the NCAA Tournament super regional round Saturday, with a 4-0 loss to Florida in Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Condron Family Ballpark.
The No. 15 seed Gamecocks (42-21) fell to the No. 2 seed Gators (50-19) 5-4 in Game 1 before getting shut out in Saturday's rematch. Designated hitter Will McGillis, shortstop Braylen Wimmer and star freshman Ethan Petry landed the Gamecocks' only hits, though Petry also reached second base in the fourth inning on the first career error by Gators centerfielder Wyatt Langford.
The Gators advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, while South Carolina falls to 1-7 all-time in road super regionals. This season marked the program's first super regional appearance since 2018, but it has not reached the College World Series since finishing runner-up in 2012.

Offense has no answer for Hurston Waldrep
Both teams threw their top pitchers in Game 2, but Jack Mahoney couldn't contain the Gators the same way Hurston Waldrep dominated South Carolina. The junior ace had 13 strikeouts — his second-most of the season — and gave up just three hits in eight innings of work. Waldrep threw strikes on 65% of his pitches.
Mahoney seemed poised for a strong performance after striking out two of three batters faced in the top of the first. However, he gave up the first two runs in the second inning after walking BT Riopelle, then allowing a single to Luke Heyman. A double from Colby Halter brought both home. Mahoney retired the side in the third and escaped a bases-loaded situation in the fourth, but South Carolina pulled him in favor of reliever Chris Veach after back-to-back walks followed by an RBI double from Josh Rivera.
Gamecocks defense makes uncharacteristic mistakes
While USC's lone error by Wimmer ultimately didn't hurt it, South Carolina's defense was not the lock-down unit it looked like during the Columbia Regional. The Gamecocks allowed three stolen bases, all by different runners, and Langford stealing second in the fifth inning directly led to the Gators' third run that seemed to demoralize the defense.
The errors compounded in the fifth inning — coincidentally, the same inning when Florida tied the score in Game 1. Left fielder Dylan Brewer was massively off-target attempting to beat Langford home, and catcher Cole Messina had to move several feet off the plate to collect it. Messina also overthrew a pass back to Mahoney that didn't do any damage but did rile up the record-setting home crowd.
