Philadelphia 76ers rookie Zhaire Smith has suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot and will undergo surgery, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Smith, 19, suffered the injury Monday in Las Vegas during longtime NBA coach Tim Grgurich’s developmental camp for NBA players and returned to Philadelphia on Tuesday for an MRI. Tests revealed the Jones fracture and surgery is tentatively scheduled for later this week, league sources said. Smith will also visit another foot specialist this week, league sources said.

Smith was the No. 16 overall pick in the June draft to the Phoenix Suns, who dealt him and a 2021 first-round draft pick via Miami to the 76ers for Mikal Bridges.

Out of Texas Tech, the 6-foot-5 Smith is one of the top athletes in this rookie class and has shown progress in his development as a ball-handler and shooter who has been focused on rounding out his game over the past few months. Smith entered the NBA after starring for one season at Texas Tech.

Smith’s setback is the latest run of tough luck for the 76ers, who have had quite an injury history with their promising rookie players.
