Mets' Ronny Mauricio has torn ACL, will need surgery

Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio has a torn ACL and needs surgery.

Mauricio underwent tests in the Dominican Republic for an injury suffered during a game Sunday, and had been expected to travel to New York in order to be examined by Mets doctors, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The Mets announced Tuesday that an estimated return-to-play timeline for Mauricio will be determined following the procedure.

Playing on Sunday night for Tigres del Licey, Mauricio took off from first base as if to steal, stopped and then fell to the ground.

Mauricio debuted last year for the Mets and hit .248 in 26 games with two home runs, and a .643 OPS. Those numbers did not fully represent the promise and athleticism that he showed. By the end of the season, the Mets’ outgoing leadership team slotted him ahead of Brett Baty and Mark Vientos as a potential third baseman of the future.

The video of Mauricio’s injury was first shared on social media by Michael Mayer of Metsmerized.
