Sources: Chiefs, DT Chris Jones agree to 4-year, $85M extension
A week ago, the Kansas City Chiefs locked up the leader of their offense after signing Patrick Mahomes to a historic long-term deal. On Tuesday, the Super Bowl champions took another major step toward repeating by locking up star defender Chris Jones with a long-term extension, a source told Yahoo Sports.
The Chiefs and Jones agreed Tuesday to a four-year deal worth $85 million, including incentives, a source told Yahoo Sports. In Jones’ extension, $60 million is guaranteed and doesn’t include a signing bonus. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that $37 million will be due to Jones upon signing.
Jones, a defensive tackle, had 24 1/2 sacks over the past two seasons for Kansas City. The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on him in February, and were set to pay the 26-year-old $16.1 million this year. For months, the two sides remained at an impasse as Jones sought a deal around $21 million a season.
The deal with Jones, who threatened to sit out the 2020 season a few weeks ago, solidifies the Chiefs as repeat contenders. They are primed to return 20 of their 22 starters from a team that defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
Chiefs rookies are scheduled to report to training camp on Saturday.
