Somerset-Canyons girls basketball secures program first with district championship

POMPANO BEACH — When Anthony McCutcheon took over the Somerset Academy-Canyons girls basketball program, the team had won just three games in their past three seasons.

On Friday night, McCutcheon led the Lady Cougars to their first district title.

Somerset (19-5) cruised past North Broward Prep 75-44 in the District 13-4A championship, securing a place in regionals for the second consecutive season.

“We knew we had the potential to win districts, but it just took us continuing to build every single year,” said McCutcheon. “I’m 100 percent proud of how the girls came out, played hard, played together, and we ended up coming out district champs.”

It was a rematch of a Region 4A semifinal from a year ago, in which North Broward Prep took down the Lady Cougars 56-41 ending their season. This time, it was Somerset coming out on top led by freshman Alanna Fabrini’s game-high 15-point performance.

Fabrini leads the team, averaging 14.3 points per game, and she again made her presence felt Friday night. The freshman drained three 3-pointers on the night, including a dazzling crossover into a 3-pointer that was nothing but net in the third quarter.

“She was a dog tonight,” McCutcheon said of Fabrini. “When the game was close for that stretch of five to seven minutes, she just took over the game and she was unstoppable. That’s the type of talent she has.”

Fabrini was helped out by fellow freshman Delanie Doty and junior Rebecca Souverain, both of whom ended the night with 13 points.

Doty was active from behind the arc as well, sinking three 3-pointers in the first half alone. Meanwhile, Souverain was a force to be reckoned with in the paint, scoring eight of her 13 points in the second half to go with multiple blocks on the defensive end.

“Shows that we have really, really great team chemistry,” said McCutcheon. “All the girls just really enjoy playing together, hanging out together. And I think because they enjoy being together off the court, it kind of leads to success on the court. I think that’s been a huge difference.”

Even with another district title in hand, McCutcheon isn’t satisfied just yet. After falling short in the regional playoffs last season, McCutcheon and the Lady Cougars now have their sights set on an even bigger goal: a state championship.

“We’re hoping for a deep run. We want to get to Lakeland and that’s what we’ve been telling the girls all season long,” said McCutcheon. “Districts is the first step, but we really want to be able to say ‘Yeah, we got to the state final and we’re still coming for more.’

“So we’re going to get back in the gym and start trying to game plan and work, work, work to be ready to win that next game.”
