Social media reacts to performances of Saints QBs Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler
One of the position battles to watch most as the preseason progresses for the New Orleans Saints will be the race for the QB2 spot between Jake Haener and 2024 NFL draft selection Spencer Rattler.
The two went head-to-head in real, on-the-field action for the first time on Saturday in what also marked the former South Carolina passer's NFL debut.
Haener saw the field before Rattler did as the Saints offense showed some of its same familiar stagnancy at first, but was able to breathe some life into it roughly 29 minutes into the contest with a beautifully thrown 58-yard pass to wide receiver A.T. Perry.
But it was Rattler who would put the first points of the evening on the board for New Orleans, rolling right for a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter. And it was also Rattler who led the game-winning drive for the Saints in the final minutes of the game, setting up kicker Charlie Smyth up for a 37-yard field goal that allowed the Saints to come away with the 16-14 win in the last five seconds of the game.
Here's a look at what those on social media had to say about Haener and Rattler:
Spencer Rattler just led a GW drive for the Saints in his hometown. I’m gonna have to stay off twitter because it’s going to be wild on here.

Jake Haener played with 32 stitches in his right cheek after having skin cancer surgery this past week. He is scheduled to have the stitches removed on Monday. He protected the area on his cheek with Steri-Strips.

Have to love Jake Haener's competitiveness. He said to me in the locker room, "Not bad for a guy with a weak arm."
He played with 32 stitches in his face. Told me that he wasn't supposed to practice this week but said a guy in a fight can't take days off.— Nick Underhill (@nick_underhill) August 11, 2024
Some thoughts on the Saints preseason opener
- Offensive line is a huge problem, no surprise
- Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler both delivered
- AT Perry might be the type of guy who just shows up when it matters
- Starting DL looked great, Foskey is running out of time

That's a great play for A.T. Perry in particular. Needed to show something in this game and has now had a couple nice hook ups with Jake Haener. Great ball by Haener as well.

The Spencer Rattler era started tonight. Game-winning drive, no stopping him now
