In just three NFL preseason games, former UNC quarterback Drake Maye lived up to his hype as the New England Patriots' third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Maye outplayed Brissett in the preseason, throwing for 192 yards and a touchdown, compared to just 36 yards and an interception for Brissett. This led to many speculating that Maye, despite his lack of NFL experience, had won the starting job.

If you also watched New England in the preseason, you likely noticed its horrible offensive line. This can be the sign of early downfalls for young quarterbacks – just look at what happened with former Duke quarterback Daniel Jones on the New York Giants.

On Thursday afternoon, with head coach Jerod Mayo citing Brissett's ability to help the Patriots win now and wanting to preserve Maye's longevity, Mayo named Brissett QB1 over Maye.

"There are a lot of factors that led to this choice," head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters Thursday. "I think the hard part is thinking in the short term and the long term at the same time. As an organization, though, we feel like Jacoby gives us our best chance to win right now."

In seasons' past, we've watched veterans start the year, only for rookies to take over midway through the year. Just look at what Oklahoma Heisman Trophy-winning QB Baker Mayfield did with the Cleveland Browns in 2018.

Let's take a look at what social media thought of Brissett winning New England's starting QB job over the former North Carolina Tar Heels standout.
