Shirtless fans and big man TDs: How social media reacted to Illinois football's big road win
(This story was updated to correct a typo.)
The Illinois football team earned a spot in the nation conversation Friday night with a 31-24 overtime victory against Nebraska, opening the Big Ten Conference season with an impressive road victory in a hostile environment.
The No. 24 Fighting Illini moved to 4-0 for the first time since the 2011, using a balanced offense and big-play defense to quiet the Cornhuskers' crowd that sold out venerable Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the 400th consecutive time.

While that pre-game ceremony was cool, it went pretty much downhill for the Huskers from there. We took a spin around X.com — formerly known as Twitter — to see how college football fans reacted to the big win.
History for Illini football
It was always in the range of outcomes that Illinois could surprise this year — especially after the win over then-nationally ranked Kansas. (In fact, yours truly predicted an Illini victory Friday). Add the Nebraska victory to that, and Illinois now is the only college football team in the nation with two wins against teams ranked in The Associated Press Top 25.
What's more, this is the first time the Illini have two Top 25 wins in September. High times in Champaign.
Illinois is the only team in the nation with two AP Top 25 wins this season.
The Illini also have two AP Top 25 wins during September for the first time in program history.#Illini | #HTTO— Illini Stats & Notes (@IlliniStats) September 21, 2024
Dubious history for Nebraska
On the other sideline, the superlatives are grim. Nebraska is now 0-27 versus ranked opponents since September 17, 2016 — a drought that is nearly 3,000 days long.

Some love for the big man from Illinois
Who doesn't love a big man touchdown? Former East St. Louis high school player Brandon Henderson made a memory Friday, grabbing a 6-yard touchdown pass during a tackle-eligible play. The 6-foot-5, 335-pound sophomore after the game said he wasn't nervous because lives for "moments like this."
"He just became every lineman's hero," wrote @2006illinifan on X.com.

Well-wishers from across the web
Plenty of college football's talking heads offered their well-wishes across X.com on Friday night, including Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN and Fox Sports' Joe Klatt. Some former Illinois players now in the NFL also posted their appreciation for the upset, like Seattle Seahawks defensive back Devon Witherspoon, picked No. 5 overall last season out of Illinois.
What a HUGE win for @IlliniFootball in Lincoln to remain unbeaten!

Illinois coach Bret Bielema's scroll thumb was strong Friday, because the coach was busy reposting and sharing many of the congratulations. He peppered #famILLy #ILL across at least a half-dozen posts — and didn't seem like he was slowing down as the night went along.

We'll leave you with this (and hopefully not nightmares)
Illini fan Robert Rosenthal promised earlier this week, that if Illinois pulled off the win, he would pose shirtless for a photo. He paid that debt Friday night.
And, naturally, Bielema reshared the post, calling it "priceless."
A promise is a promise. I said on the Field Pass this week that if we won you’d see a shirtless photo so… pic.twitter.com/WF7eyIRkzj
