The deal reportedly contains an escalator that could increase the deal's base salary to $207 million total if Gilgeous-Alexander makes an All-NBA team.
With the new contract, Oklahoma City locks down its foundational star for the foreseeable future as it tries to leverage its mountain of draft picks into another contender.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the Thunder's guy
Gilgeous-Alexander has done nothing but improve since entering the league as the 11th overall pick of the loaded 2018 NBA draft. After a promising rookie season with the Los Angeles Clippers, he was dealt to the Thunder as the centerpiece of the Paul George blockbuster trade.
In two seasons with the Thunder, Gilgeous-Alexander went from 19 points per game in 2019-20 to 23.7 last season and 3.3 assists per game to 5.9. He may also only be getting started at 23 years old. That's the kind of player you want to build around when you've traded away everything that isn't nailed down.
