After setting OU football record, Billy Bowman 'very humbled' by interception TD returns

NORMAN — In the days leading up to an OU football game, Billy Bowman likes to manifest a pick six.

"I go through the week knowing I'm gonna get one," Bowman said. "And when the opportunity comes, I've gotta take advantage of it."

Clearly, it's a good strategy.

OU made a statement with its 69-45 home win over TCU on Friday to end the regular season, and Bowman delivered the exclamation point midway through the fourth quarter.

TCU's Josh Hoover threw into a crowded area along the sideline and watched as the ball got intercepted by Bowman. The junior safety then broke a tackle before cutting the across the field, and he eventually found the end zone for a 45-yard touchdown return.

“We were in Cover 2, so I was playing pretty deep on the half side of the field," Bowman said. "I just saw two receivers cross my face, and then I got my eyes back. (Hoover) threw it outside, and I just attacked it.”

Bowman has manifested three pick sixes this season.

The trio of touchdowns is the most by a player in program history for a single season. He has also returned his six interceptions for 238 yards, which is another single-season program record.

“I’m very humbled about it," Bowman said of his records. "I’m very honored. All the glory to God. I truly do put the work in for the results. Anybody will tell you that. I’m gonna continue to get better and try to do more.”

Bowman has established himself as one of OU's most reliable playmakers, and the rest of nation is taking notice.

In a recent 2024 NFL mock draft, The Draft Wire projected Bowman to get selected in the second round (No. 59 overall) by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. (2) intercepts a pass beside TCU Horned Frogs wide receiver Major Everhart (22) and Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Kendel Dolby (15) before returning it for a touchdown during a college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the TCU Horned Frogs at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla., Friday, Nov. 24, 2023. Oklahoma won 69-45.

Bowman was asked after Friday's contest if he intends to return to OU next season.

“I don’t know yet," Bowman said. "Right now, we’ve still got a Big 12 Championship game to play in, hopefully, and then probably a bowl game to play in. So I do not know yet.”

It'll take some more manifestation by Bowman for the Sooners to make the Big 12 Championship.

OU (10-2, 7-2 Big 12) kept itself in the race by defeating TCU, but it isn't in the driver's seat. It must wait to see how fellow conference title contenders Texas, Oklahoma State and Kansas State close out their respective regular seasons.

"We’ve worked hard," Bowman said. "I feel like if it’s in God’s plan, then it’s gonna happen. So we’re gonna stay tuned into it and see what happens.”
